Terry A. Hurlbut, Jr., 93, of Plano, Texas, passed away on August 18, 2023. Terry was born July 22, 1930, in Boston Massachusetts to Terry A. Hurlbut, Sr., and Esther Hurlbut (Pruyne).
His family moved to Maine when he was a toddler, and it became a special place to which he often returned throughout his life. Terry attended Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia, where he studied engineering and was a member of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). Terry served proudly in the Army and was deployed to Korea shortly before the end of the conflict. After he returned from service, Terry attended graduate school at Harvard University and earned a master’s in business administration.
He spent his professional career working in engineering, construction and equipment supply firms, and was an entrepreneur and business owner. Upon retirement, Terry put his considerable knowledge and talent to use as a handyman taking on all manner of projects, great and small. Terry built extensive workshops in multiple different houses over the years, which were filled with tools, equipment and supplies used on his projects. Aside from repairing and remodeling anything that needed fixing or updating, Terry’s hobbies included woodworking and carving, fishing, and sailing.
Terry’s favorite place in the world was the Wooden Boat School in Brooklyn, Maine, where he honed his skills in sailing, boatbuilding, model building and seamanship. Per his wishes, Terry’s ashes will be scattered over Penobscot Bay in Maine, which was his favorite sailing spot. Terry had an incredible zest for life and insatiable curiosity, and he loved his family deeply. His warmth, enthusiasm, and boundless good cheer will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Terry is survived by his loving wife Sandy, son Terry A. Hurlbut, III, brother Dick (Eileen) Hurlbut, stepchildren Lisa (Tim) Dula and Greg (Stephie) Luyt, nieces Susan (Nick) Usechak and Elizabeth (Brendan) Fleming, nephews Christophe (Brigette) Hurlbut and David (Monet) Hurlbut, and grandchildren Matthew and Kristin Dula, and Grady, Emery and Theo Luyt.
