With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Marie Joyce (Hammond) Berger, age 75, of Plano. Marie, a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died on August 18, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.
Marie was born on September 23, 1947 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the sixth child and fourth daughter in a family of seven children. Marie attended St. Margaret’s Catholic School and later Mariemont High School in Cincinnati, graduating in 1965. It was at Mariemont High School that Marie met the love of her life, David (Dave) Berger. They were married on May 8, 1965 and enjoyed an exceptionally loving marriage for 58 years.
Marie and Dave moved to Austin, Texas in 1970, and it was there that they built a home and raised a family. Being a mother and homemaker was the joy of Marie’s life, and she dedicated herself to providing her two children, Lisa and Jonathan (Jon) a life full of joy and love. As a mother, her kindness, resilience and unconditional love provided an example to which the rest of us can aspire.
The time spent in Austin was especially happy for Marie personally as well. She became a talented artist and oil-painter and sold her paintings of the Texas Hill Country on the local art scene. She later attended The University of Texas, graduating with honors in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts. After college, she enjoyed successful careers in advertising and real estate.
After Austin, Marie and Dave made homes in Dayton, Ohio, Atlanta, Georgia and finally back to Plano, Texas. During her retirement years, she made new friends, enjoyed golf and travelled the world. It was also in Plano that she found perhaps her greatest role, as the grandmother to Amanda, Ryan, Trey, Katie and Maddie. Her grandchildren knew her as “Nannie,” and they will always remember their Nannie for holiday meals, Christmas wrapping paper, vacations, “spend-the-nights”, Sunday morning breakfast, card games and movies. They will also remember the legacy of unconditional love.
As we gather to celebrate Marie, we will remember her smile, her beautiful blue eyes, her kindness, warm heart and the generosity of her spirit. Her absence leaves a hole in our heart and in our family.
Marie is survived by her husband, Dave; her daughter, Lisa (Bob) Stickney of Keller Texas; her son, Jon Berger of Frisco Texas; grandchildren, Amanda (Dreagan) Patterson, Ryan Stickney, Trey Stickney, Katie Berger and Maddie Berger; brother Jim (Arlene) Hammond; and sisters, Martha O’neal and Myrna Ward as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her brothers, Johnny and Jerry Hammond, and her sister, Merle Hammond.
A memorial service to honor Marie’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 25, 2023 in the Faith Chapel at Prestonwood Baptist Church, 6801 W. Park Blvd, Plano, Texas 75093 with a reception to follow. A private interment will be held at a later date.
If desired, contributions can be made in Marie’s name to T. Boone Pickens Hospice Center, Faith Presbyterian Hospital:
