Mabel Hilda (Yow) Bremer is now healed and happy in her heavenly home after fighting a long illness with courage, grace, and strength. She was born on July 4, 1924 in Carbonton, North Carolina to Hampton and Mossie (Mashburn) Yow – and all her life, she loved and celebrated her special, patriotic birthday. After graduating from Greenwood High School in 1942, she moved to Washington, D.C., and “through persistence” landed a job with the U.S. Navy Yard where she worked for over three years refurbishing gun sights for U.S. ships at sea. She was very proud to work on behalf of her country during WWII. After marrying Sam Bremer in 1955, Mabel helped raise five children while her husband served in the U.S. Air Force. While serving as a dedicated Air Force wife, Mabel began studying antiques and ran several successful antique shops in various parts of the country. After her husband retired from the Air Force, he joined her, and together, they enjoyed the “thrill of the hunt” for unique artifacts. Mabel also loved nature, and it loved her back as evidenced in the years of beautiful gardens, flowers, and bird sanctuaries she nurtured. Additionally, Mabel was a talented writer who penned lovely, poignant reflections about her life on this earth.
Most importantly, Mabel served as a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend, and her entire life was a testament to her strong Christian faith. Over the years, she taught Sunday School wherever the family was stationed and served in various volunteer positions living out and sharing her faith with everyone she met. Her sweet smile and gentle spirit will be missed by all who knew her. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:23
Mabel is survived by her cherished children Greg Holt and his wife Liz, Darline Reid, Dallie Bremer Clark (Bassuk) and her husband Larry, Samuel John Bremer, III and his wife Emily; grandchildren Wayne Jones, Drew Clark, Ashley Rininger, Priscilla Byers, Charlie Sharp, Jason Powers, Samuel John Bremer IV, Eric Holt, Patrick Holt, Will Bremer, Vanessa Bassuk, Heather Whitacre and Stephanie Yeager; great grandchildren Zoey Rininger, Skye Byers, Stella Durbin, Joshua Sharp, Samuel John Bremer V, Lorelai Whitacre, Jacqueline Whitacre, Travis Holt, Austin Holt, Hunter Holt, Jake Powers; sister Carole Brown, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Samuel John Bremer, Jr., treasured daughter Jenell, parents, and five siblings.
