David Miles Calvert

David was born October 1, 1966 in Chicago, Illinois and his family moved to the Kansas City area in his early childhood. At the age of 16, David’s family moved to Dallas where he attended and graduated from Trinity Christian Academy with his own personal honors. While at TCA, he met several lifelong friends. He could be found weekend nights driving the family Cutlass or brown Suburban.

Upon graduation, he attended Texas Lutheran and played soccer there for 1 year. David subsequently joined the United States Navy, after being heavily influenced by the popular movie Top Gun, where he was on active duty for 2 years and reserves for 6 years and stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. One of the highlights of his service was his Mediterranean cruise aboard the CVN-69 Eisenhower where he was able to visit parts of Europe and the Holy Land. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he found his way to the University of North Texas where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in 1997.

David supported himself through school while working various jobs and after graduating landed his first job in the telecom industry. In 2002, he started working for Masergy Communications as one of the first group of employees. He was employed with Masergy until his death, for 18 years, which is so unusual in this day and especially in the telecom industry.
David and Melissa met in July 2002 at a mutual friends’ birthday party, they instantly connected, feeling like they had known each other for years. David proposed to Melissa in March 2003 and they were married November 22, 2003 in Dallas. Their joy was spending time with their family and many friends and taking trips. Their beautiful baby girl Sela Genevieve was born on November 16, 2006 in Dallas.

David was known for his quick wit and subtle humor, his kindness and loyalty, his hard work ethic and determination, his willingness to do anything for his family or friends, and his immense love, joy and pride in his wife and daughter. From his family, David was called on for unwavering support. From his friends, he is described as one of the best men they have ever known. David was well respected and loved by his many colleagues and acquaintances he had throughout his time at Masergy. And from his wife, she knew from the moment she met him until his last breath, that David was the man God chose for her.

David died unexpectedly on May 9, 2020 in Allen, Texas.

David is survived by his loving wife Melissa (Medrano) Calvert; daughter Sela Genevieve Calvert; mother Anne Calvert and her husband Carl Skooglund; siblings Jay Calvert and his wife Cindy, Chris Calvert, Andy Calvert and his wife Kristin; father in law Raymond Medrano, sister in law Elizabeth Medrano and nieces Megan, Emma, Abby, Savannah and Jacqueline Calvert and many loving friends. He was preceded in death by his father Dennis Calvert and mother in law Susan Medrano.

The family will receive friends for a visitation Thursday, May 14, 2020 from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Allen Family Funeral Options. Due to the current COVID restrictions there will be a private funeral service to celebrate David’s life for the family only, officiated by Pastor Robert Matthews.  The service will be broadcast and will be available for viewing after 1:00 P.M. on Friday, May 15, 2020.
