Thomas F Nickman was born the fifth child to Frank and Bessie Nickman on August 1, 1936. Tom grew up on a family farm outside of Pleasanton, Nebraska. In addition to daily farm chores Tom was an athlete playing football and basketball making all-conference in both sports. During the 1951-1952 season in basketball his team went to the State Finals, the next year 1952-1953 he tied the State scoring record in six-man football.
After high school Tom enlisted in the Air Force where he spent time in Texas, Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska and England being honorably discharged on February 7, 1958.
After serving in the Air Force Tom attended Kearney State Teachers College, now known as the University of Nebraska at Kearney earning a teaching degree and moved to Michigan joining his sister Elaine and brother Gene. He was hired by Waterford Township School District and taught business classes as well as coaching football (5 years) and basketball (11 years). During this time Tom married his beautiful wife Suzanne on September 14, 1963, and had 3 children, Steve, Mark and Julie while residing in the Waterford area of Michigan. Tom also earned a master's degree in education and an Educational Specialists degree in administration.
During his career in education as a teacher and administrator, Tom taught business classes, drivers' education, coached football and basketball and officiated various sports and helped to run summer school before retiring.
During the early years of retirement Tom and Sue lived in Michigan and spent the winters in Florida to escape the snow and cold. After a few years of being "Snowbirds" they became full time residents of Florida living in the City of Stuart. After several years and growing weary of hurricane evacuations their kids convinced them to move to the Dallas-Ft. Worth area so the family would be close. In Texas, Tom played golf, enjoyed walking their dog Mindy and participating in community social events. He looked forward to eating out as often as possible but especially on Saturday mornings for breakfast with his sons and good friends.
Tom is survived by his wife Suzanne (61 years of marriage), his sons Steve and Mark, his daughter Julie and her husband Scot Harmon and 6 grandchildren, Donald, Alana, Darrian, Makayla, Noah and Marissa.
Tom's Catholic faith was strong and because of his belief we know that he was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus upon his passing and for those that believe, we will one day see him again.
