T. David Coomer

February 5, 1953 — October 25, 2019

Called home by his beloved Savior, Thomas David Coomer, met his Lord Jesus Christ on October 25, 2019. David was truly a Good Samaritan, giving freely of his time, his talents, and his knowledge to any he encountered. He loved his family with all his heart. He was a trusted friend to many. He was a genuinely good man.

Born February 5, 1953, in Dallas, Texas, David was the first son of Thomas Judson Coomer and Edith Athene (Mouser) Coomer. He attended elementary schools in Dallas and later attended Junior and Senior High in Plano, Texas.

In 1974, David enlisted in the U.S. Navy attaining the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class. A submariner, he served as a nuclear missile technician on the attack submarine, USS James K. Polk, assisting in the operation and maintenance of the Poseidon Missile Launching System. He received glowing reviews from his superiors. In recognition of his faithful, zealous, and obedient naval service, he was awarded the Good Conduct Award in 1978. He passed all examinations and requirements to advance to Chief Petty Officer, one of the youngest men in the Navy to do so. However, he chose to return home to Texas and was honorably discharged in 1980.

One of the highlights of his naval experience was the opportunity in January 1999 to be present for the ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia to decommission the USS James K. Polk. It was also an opportunity for the reunion of USS James K. Polk crew members and their families.

Shortly after his discharge from the U.S. Navy, David returned to Texas to reconnect with his high school sweetheart, Nancy Wooten Scott. During his years in the Navy, he often thought of her. On August 2, 1986, in a beautiful ceremony in Plano at First Christian Church, David and Nancy began a 33-year marriage that produced much happiness, lots of laughter, and the foundation for raising three wonderful children.

David spent more than 20 years with Texas Instruments, and later Raytheon. He was an inventive man who enjoyed bringing new ideas to life as well as making improvements to existing designs. Many remember him as being able to fix anything.

In later years, David pursued self-employment with a commercial trucking business followed by his last career, commercial and residential general contracting. David was an artistic man who loved to work with wood and, in recent years, pursued metal arts. A lifelong guitarist, David sang and composed music. His lyrics were memorable and reflected his deeply held love of God, family, and country.
In the understatement of the decade, David was a passionate patriot. To his tribute, he spearheaded a petition for limited terms in Allen, Texas, acquiring the necessary signatures for the matter to become a ballot entry, and saw the proposition passed by voters.

David is survived by his lovely wife, Nancy, and her daughter, Erica Renee Scott and fiancé Christopher Combs of Austin, daughter Erin Renee Coomer Mason and husband Dwight of Houston, and son, John David Coomer and Gayla Sullivan of Frisco, Texas. Further survivors include his mother, Edith M. Coomer of Plano, sister Janis Crabtree of Sugar Land, sister Joyce Horn and fiancé Brian Sloan of Sherman, sister Lois Waller and husband Steve of The Woodlands, and brother Don Coomer and wife, Pamela of Plano, Texas. He is also survived by numerous extended family members, including his wife's family, loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.

Preceding him in death are his father, Thomas Judson Coomer, brothers-in-law Gary Horn and Dr. Leonard E. Crabtree, sister-in-law Corinne Denise Hermonat, and nephew Jason Wood.

The family will receive friends for a visitation Wednesday, October 30, 2019 from 5:00-6:00 P.M. There will be a funeral service to celebrate David’s life following the visitation, starting at 6:00 P.M.

David will be laid to rest with honors at Dallas/Ft National Cemetery Friday, November 1, 2019 at 11:00 A.M., 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, Texas.
