Shirley Ann Boyd, 86, of Plano, Texas, passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024, in Dallas, Texas. She was born May 27, 1938, at home in Pine Hill, Rockcastle County, Kentucky, the daughter of Hobart Sr. and Margaret Nancy McHargue Parrett.
Shirley grew up in the small, rural town of Mount Vernon, Kentucky. She excelled academically, earning all A’s throughout her 12 years in public school, graduating as valedictorian of Mount Vernon High School in 1956 and voted the Most Likely to Succeed. While attending Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, she met her beloved husband, Joshua Rieff Boyd, Jr., and they were married on September 14, 1958. She later attended the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, where she received a bachelor’s degree on May 23, 1971.
From 1971 to 1998, Shirley worked as a 5th and 6th grade teacher at Howard and Cambridge Elementary Schools in Alamo Heights Independent School District, San Antonio, Texas. Her love of science, gentle demeanor and patient approach made her a favorite among her students.
Shirley was a cherished member of the Hunter's Glen Baptist Church of Plano. She deeply enjoyed her time in Sunday School and Bible study with her many friends. Above all, Shirley especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life.
Shirley’s sweet nature touched the hearts of all who knew her. She will be lovingly remembered by her son Mark Boyd and his wife Millie, of Parker, Texas; daughters Karen Hollon and her husband Dwight, of White Rock, New Mexico and Kim Boyd and her husband John Vanderham, of Sulphur Springs, Texas; grandson Zachary Hollon and his wife Molly, of Sheridan, Wyoming and granddaughters Brittany Hollon and her husband David Mitchell, of Houston, Texas and MacKenzie Boyd, of Parker, Texas; step granddaughter Natalie Vanderham, of Santa Fe Springs, California; great-grandson Hudson Hollon and great-granddaughters, Penelope Hollon and Roma Mitchell; numerous nephews and nieces; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brother, Hobart Jr. and sisters Charlotte Kay Parrett Singleton and Alice Parrett Harrison.

Shirley will be laid to rest with her husband Joshua in a private interment at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, Dallas, Texas.
