Scott Leroy Brekenfeld

July 7, 1941 — November 3, 2020

In the last year of his life, Scott longed to be with Jesus.  He said every day, “I just want to be with Jesus.” Scott went into His loving presence on November 3 rd , 2020.

Scott was born July 7, 1941 to Hans and Lauris (Peg) Brekenfeld in the small rural farming community of Belle Fourche, South Dakota.  He loved growing up in the Black Hills and returned there as often as he could in later years, rarely missing the Brekenfeld Family Reunion held every two years.  His family is large, his father being one of ten children, and family reunions often consisted of more than 100 close relatives.  And he knew every one of them!

Scott attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, receiving a degree in Metallurgical Engineering.  He soon discovered that this was not the career for him and joined the army for a three-year stint in Germany.  He loved the military and was proud of his service. In later years, he lit up when he talked about it.  His army experience was a highlight in his life.

Upon returning to the United States, he moved to Texas and worked for Texas Instruments for 30 years.  During his tenure, he obtained a Master of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University, and advanced to Finance and Accounting Manager at Texas Instruments.  He also became a partner in a fishing tackle mail order business called Bullard International, with orders from around the world, working evenings and weekends managing the financial aspects of the business. This enabled him and his partner to buy a seaworthy fishing boat that they kept in the Gulf of Mexico to entertain clients.  He had many a fishing story to tell.

Scott married Margaret (Peggy) Jane Bentley March 16,1968.  They had two children, Rebecca, and Byron.  After a long illness with cancer, Peggy died at the end of 1991.  Scott was a strong, devoted caregiver.

Scott married Susan Seifert, also widowed, June 25, 1994 successfully creating one strong family from the blending of two.  Sue has two children, Brad and Sonja.

Scott had a passion for travel and introduced Sue to far flung parts of the world. In all, he traveled to 25 countries and 4 continents.  His last goal was to visit all 50 states, which he accomplished with a trip to West Virginia in October of 2016.

Family meant everything to this man.  That beautiful smile would appear, and his eyes would sparkle as plans for family trips, dinners, parties, game nights, pizza, and other celebrations were arranged. Grandkids recall helping him rake autumn leaves into piles, only to have them jump in, scattering leaves all over the yard to be raked into piles again and again.

When Scott’s family and friends were asked to describe him in one word, there were many: storyteller, joker, witty, intelligent, kind, cheerful, generous, loving, caring, and having such a nice smile.  But above all, FAITHFUL is the word that describes him best.

Scott was a strong Christian, having served his church in many capacities: prison ministry, church finance board, capital campaign, and deacon.  God and his faith were number one in his life.  Now he is resting in the presence of Jesus.

Scott is survived by his wife Sue; children Byron Brekenfeld (Wife Susan), Rebecca Brekenfeld, Brad Seifert (Wife Wendy), Sonja Small (Husband Kirk); grandchildren Lauren and Ashley Lantz, Emma, Sophia, and Owen Brekenfeld, Caitlin Brekenfeld, Madison and Hayden Seifert, Jake and Luke Small; great-grandson Julian Barrows; sister Beverly Nemer (Husband Ed) an aunt and uncle, nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins.

A Celebration of Life service will be held November 11, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. in the Faith Chapel at Prestonwood Baptist Church, 6801 W. Park Blvd, Plano, Texas.  Scott will be laid to rest at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to The Fisher House Foundation, 12300 Twinbrook Parkway, Suite 410, Rockville MD 20852. Fisher House builds houses near military hospitals for family members to live in while their military member is hospitalized.  This honors Scott’s life and love for the military.
