It’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years. (Abraham Lincoln)
That being the case, Katy truly outlived many of her elders, for her brief number of years were filled, packed down and overflowing with abundant life.
Katy was a flowing stream. Her life was positively influenced by so many wonderful people: family, Sunday school teachers, schoolteachers, dance teachers and amazing friends. Katy was not a reservoir. What she received, she shared, positively impacting the lives of so many others.
Katy loved. She loved her family. She loved a big guy named Jeff and a little girl named Sadie. She loved to dance and felt quite at home on a recital stage or football field. She loved helping other dancers aspiring for a common goal at the cost of her own aspirations. She loved a dog named Charlie. Blue Bell ice cream. A week each summer at Felder Camp meeting in Mississippi. Blue Bell ice cream. Shutterfly. Being a Baylor Bear. Writing, with hopes of writing a book. Country music, with an early dream of being a Nashville star. The movie White Christmas. Blue Bell. Jesus.
Cancer won a battle. Katy won the war. She had/has “a story”, chronicled over her eleven-year fight against the dreaded disease in her Caring Bridge blogs (her book). Her faith, vulnerability, honesty and humor have impacted – in a number of cases eternally – so many people, evidenced by testimonies received in response to her writings, many of those by people she never met. In this life.
A favorite saying framed and hung in the Smith home: “I trust the next chapter because I know the author.”
Katy’s Army war cry: By His Strength, For His Glory!
