Sandra Lou Sherrill Hammitt was born on July 6, 1937 in Lubbock, Texas to parents David Winfred Sherrill and Mary Lou Morris Sherrill. She lived in Dallas, Texas and passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on February 1, 2023 surrounded by Angels and her beloved family.
Sandra lived the first nine years of her life in Levelland, Texas before her family moved to Lubbock after World War II. She attended Lubbock High School, graduating in 1955, before attending Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University), graduating in 3 years in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She made many life-long friends as an active member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority at Texas Tech, being in the second pledge class of Gamma Rho Chapter and a 1956 initiate. She was Past President of the Beta Kappa Beta Alumni Chapter in Dallas and was on the Committee for the National Convention when held in Dallas. Sandra also maintained many friendships with her high school classmates and their Lubbock Class of ’55 monthly luncheons in Dallas.
She married Robert “Bob” Hammitt in 1977, settling in Plano, Texas. They enjoyed attending the KAAM dances and traveling the world together, especially on cruises. They were members of Chase Oaks Bible Church and were active supporters of the Plano Symphony and KAAM. They both enjoyed big band music and loved to dance.
Sandra had a strong, life-long relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and would often assure people that she would pray for them. She adored Angels and thought no décor was complete without a few scattered around. Sandra loved her family and friends deeply and unconditionally, and had a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. She was most proud of her four children, their spouses, and many grandchildren, who called her “GranSan”. For many years, her mother and two sisters would take annual “Sherrill Girls” trips. Sandra loved God, her country, her family, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and the Dallas Cowboys. She was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents David and Mary Lou Sherrill, and husband Bob Hammitt. She is survived by her sister Winn Sherrill Sikes, and sister Cindy Sherrill Armstrong and husband Gary, all of Lubbock, Texas. And by her daughter Sheryl Walker Walser and husband Dave of Dallas; son Jim Walker, Jr. and wife Kelly, and granddaughters Cameron Walker and Claire Walker, all of Dallas; son Mike Walker and wife Gloria, and granddaughters Victoria Walker Lindsey and husband Jake, and granddaughter Alexandria (Lexi) Walker, all of Dallas; and son Jeff Walker and wife Shalena, and grandsons Zeb Walker, all of Wildwood, Texas and Adam Walker and Andrew Walker of Lubbock, Texas.
