Sandra (Sandy) Sue Huffman was born on February 23, 1961, in Decatur, Illinois to Herman and Ruth Huffman. She was one of 4 children. She grew up in Maroa, Illinois where she enjoyed spending time with her family, gymnastics, participating in 4-H and taking care of her pony, Trigger, and horse, Joe. Most Friday nights were spent watching her dad drive his race car at the Midland racetrack. She also had fond memories of going roller skating with her family on Sunday nights.
After graduating from Maroa Forsyth High School in 1979, she got an accounting degree at Richland Community College. Shortly after, she got a job working at a nearby nuclear power plant where she met her husband, Bob Gaston. They fell in love and later got married in Dallas, Texas.
In 1987, Sandy followed in her mother’s footsteps and joined the nursing profession. She received her Bachelor's degree from Texas Woman’s University. Bob and Sandy had their daughter, Savannah, one week after Sandy graduated. Later, they welcomed their son, Bobby, into the world in 1990. Sandy deeply loved her family. She was a devoted and loving wife and a loving, selfless, and dedicated mom.
Sandy spent most of her career working as a Registered Nurse in Interventional Radiology. She treated her patients with great respect and dignity and excelled at her work. In 2011, she graduated with her Master’s degree as a Nurse Practitioner.
She had just started practicing when she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2012. Throughout surgeries and treatments, she was incredibly strong and remained full of joy and hope. She enjoyed life and wanted to live it to the fullest. After a long, hard fight she passed away on March 23, 2023.
Sandy dedicated her life to taking care of patients, loving her family and honoring God. She lived a life of service, caring for others because she knew how valuable they were to God. She had a deep strength and confidently knew that God loved her and had an important purpose for her here on earth. She has fulfilled her purpose and is now in the loving arms of her Father. We rejoice with her but will miss her greatly until we see each other again.
1 John 4:9-11 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
