Rozann Powell

April 25, 1942 — November 9, 2017

Rozann grew up in Clinton, Oklahoma where she attended school with her dear and lifelong friends, Mary Ann and Jan. As a girl, she enjoyed playing with her many cousins, especially her dearest cousin Jenean.

After graduating from Clinton High School in 1960, she attended OBU and OU, where she joined the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma in 1964 with a degree in Elementary Education. Rozann accepted a teaching position in Amarillo, Texas where she taught for several years. She received special recognition for creating a patriotic program for sixth graders which was presented on a local television station. In Amarillo, Rozann met her future husband Ed who was also teaching there. Ed and Rozann were married in Clinton on August 5, 1967 and then moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma. Rozann continued to teach her beloved grade-schoolers while Ed completed graduate school. In 1970, Ed and Rozann were blessed with twin daughters, Elaina and Elisa. In 1972 the family moved to the Chicago area where they lived until moving to Richardson, Texas in 1976.

Rozann was very active in the Richardson Newcomers Club, where she served as president on two occasions. She also chaired the Newcomers Bridge Groups. She loved playing bridge, and she and her dear friend Helen even tried their hand at tournament bridge. She belonged to several women’s bridge and couple’s duplicate bridge groups with countless dear friends in Richardson.

Rozann loved to read, visit with friends, take family vacations, and play games of all kinds. One of Rozann’s pastimes over the years was playing video games, first on Atari, later on Nintendo. She enjoyed many hours playing and laughing over these games with her friend Helen.

For a time in the early 1990s, Rozann worked for Baker-Birdsong, where she enjoyed helping employees of various firms enroll in insurance programs with their employers. This work was a good fit for her social and caring personality.

Rozann’s girls have fond memories of her and her involvement in their lives. She was a room mom in their grade school classrooms, and faithfully attended their dance and music lessons and recitals. She was incredibly proud to cheer from the stands in high school, when her daughters danced on the drill team. Her constant support for her girls continued as they attended college, joined sororities and other organizations, and found their careers after graduation. She always encouraged her daughters to “Reach for the Stars” in everything that they did.

Rozann adored her grandsons. When her first grandson Jacob was little, they would sit together and watch episodes of Dragon Tales. She loved playing blocks with her second grandson Liam when he was small. To say that she spoiled her grandsons would be a huge understatement.

Rozann loved having pet dogs throughout her life. Her two favorites were her childhood cocker spaniel, Susie, and her most recent toy poodle, Betsy. Her family jokes that her sad-faced Betsy was the “love of her life.”

Ed and Rozann celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August 2017.

Rozann’s family is holding a small, private remembrance at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor Rozann’s memory by making a donation in her name to your favorite charity.
