Robert Marshall Quin was born September 21, 1937 in Pratt, Kansas to Leona Belle Haywood Quin and Jack Douglas Quin. He was the first and only child that the Quin’s had.
Bobby, as he came to be called, spent his early years traveling with the family as his father worked to build his fledgling oil business. His family traveled all over the lower forty-eight and spent several years in Canada. He had many memories of riding in big 4x4 trucks with his father, living in a RV, and seeing many parts of the US before they were tamed.
One story that Bob recalled was when he was 5 years old. He got frustrated with his Mother and wanted to run away. Leona offered to help Bobby pack, but he just wanted his ‘Portant Papers’. He left the house in a huff, went to the corner and sat down. When his mother came to ask how the running away was going, he replied “Good, but I am not allowed to cross the street”. Bob was a rule follower and with a little coaxing by his mother, he came back home.
After many years traveling, his family settled in Tyler, Texas when Jack took a job managing a car dealership. Bob was 17 years old and quickly developed a love for automobiles. He owned and enjoyed many cars as a teen, including a Porsche Speedster, a MG-B GT, and his favorite, a 1959 Triumph TR3. He was a member of the East Texas Sports Car Club and participated in rallies and car shows.
He graduated from John Tyler High School and decided to join the Navy Reserves in the same year, 1955. Bob served for 5 years as a Seaman, and really enjoyed his time on the ships, mostly of the destroyer class. He was influenced by the cleanliness and organization required to keep the ships running smoothly.
After the Navy, Bob enrolled in Tyler Junior College and then went on to East Texas State University (now Texas A&M Commerce) where he was member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He studied Industrial Business and Drafting. He also worked as a draftsman intern at General Electric during the summer.
While at East Texas State he met Margaret Hebel and they started dating. It became clear to Bob that Margaret was a catch and after dating exclusively for 22 months he asked her to marry him. She said yes and, in the summer of 1964, Bob married the love of his life Margaret Hebel.
After a short time in Dallas, Bob and Margaret Moved to Houston, TX and had their first child, a girl they named Laura in 1966. Shortly after the birth of their second child, a boy they named Jonathan in 1970, Bob took a job with the Fire Prevention and Engineering Bureau of Texas where he would spend most of his career.
Both Bob and Margaret had a tough year in 1972, and it was at this time that God called them both into a deeper relationship with Him. Bob said that it was like God calling for him like He had called for Adam in the garden. “Here I am Lord!” was Bob’s response and he pursued Christ the rest of his days.
After a transfer back to Dallas they connected with a local church called, Community Bible Chapel in Richardson, TX. They had two more children, another girl named Alison born in 1981 and their last child, a girl named Hillary born in 1984.
Bob had a very close relationship with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He served on the Benevolence Committee for Community Bible Chapel where he and Margaret continued to worship. Bob ministered to prisoners in the local DFW area and was an active member of the Gideon’s.
Even after retirement Bob volunteered with Medical City McKinney and continued his ministry with prisoners. He was always friendly and looking for an opportunity to tell others about his faith in Christ.
Bob was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2018. He fought a long battle and continued to be a living example for many of what it meant to entrust one’s life to the Lord, even when it looks as if all hope is lost.
On April 13, 2020 at 6:38 PM, surrounded by his wife Margaret and their 4 children, Bob took his final breath and went home to be with his Lord. He is survived by his wife of almost 56 years, Margaret Quin and his four children, Laura Roback, Jonathan Quin, Alison Enoch, Hillary McPhail, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
