Richard, known by his family and friends as Rich, proudly served in the Air Force as a Turret Systems Mechanic and was honorably discharged in 1963 as an Airman Second Class. After his service, he attended Catherman’s Business School in Cumberland, Maryland which started his 50+ year career in accounting and gave him the opportunity to express his passion for problem solving and math. During his career, he established lasting friendships with two mentors, Harry Perkins and Danny Williams. Rich loved serving others using his accounting experience by offering his time and talents to the church and individuals at no charge.
In his early years, he enjoyed roller-skating dates with his wife Jean and competing in bowling leagues. His other passions included following his favorite sports teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Pirates and Penn State Nittany Lions. When his sons were younger, he enjoyed coaching baseball and umpiring. He enjoyed supporting his children and grandchildren in their various sports. Rich’s love for Jesus gave him the passion for outreach and he was highly involved in the AWANA clubs where he served as Commander and on the Advisory Board for 25 years. He was an avid reader, and he loved playing card games. He also enjoyed collecting bald eagle memorabilia.
Rich is survived by his wife of 52 years, Roberta Jean Helsel; daughter, Renee O’Banion (Luther O’Banion); sons, Jeff Helsel and Shane Helsel (Heather Helsel); sister, Carol Ann Helsel; brother, Glenn Helsel (Linda Helsel); grandchildren (by order of birth), Scott Helsel, Ryan O’Banion, Paul Helsel, Claire Helsel, Caroline Helsel and Amanda Helsel-Polanco and numerous nieces and nephews.
“Happy” (as he was known by his grandchildren) was loved so very much and he will be missed deeply.
