Richard Joseph Cinclair, a man of principle, determination, and boundless generosity, was born on June 12, 1942, in Milbank, South Dakota, to Alice Klockeman Cinclair and Joseph Putnum Cinclair. He grew up alongside his sister, Nancy, in Aberdeen South Dakota.
Richard graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1960 and went on to pursue his passion for history and education. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in Education from Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, in 1963. His thirst for knowledge led him to the University of Wisconsin, where he obtained a master’s degree in history in 1967, and then to Ball State University, where he achieved a Ph.D. in Social and Analytical History in 1969.
It was during his time in Milwaukee that he met the love of his life, Carol Louise Zintek, on November 17, 1964. The two were married on August 28, 1965, beginning a partnership filled with love and mutual support. Together, they raised four children: Richard Joseph Cinclair Jr., David Arthur Cinclair, Robert Donald Cinclair, and Carol Lee Cinclair.
Richard’s life was defined by his belief that through education and hard work, anything was possible. This philosophy guided him as he worked tirelessly to provide for his family, often balancing multiple jobs. Whether using his hands or his mind, Richard’s efforts were always driven by his desire to create a better life for his loved ones.
For 35 years, Richard served as the Dean of Social Sciences at Eastfield College. As an administrator, he had a deep passion for working with both students and professors. His guiding philosophy was to never say no, to encourage rather than discourage. One of his favorite words was "impact," and that is exactly what he sought to make in the world. Known for his ability to work well with people, Richard’s leadership expanded his division to include disciplines such as philosophy, religion, child development, business marketing, economics, and criminal justice. His flexibility, fairness, and unwavering dedication left a lasting legacy at the college and in the lives of those he worked with.
He was a man of conviction, with an unshakable belief in equality and a commitment to helping others. Throughout his life, Richard dedicated himself to serving others in various ways including fostering, adoption, and opening his home to those in need. His generosity extended to anyone who needed a helping hand, and his selflessness touched the lives of many.
In his early years, Richard enjoyed the outdoors, particularly pheasant hunting, and he had an enduring passion for treasure hunts. An avid collector of Carnival Glass, he spent countless hours scouring antique shops in search of hidden gems. His dedication to this hobby led him to serve as the president of both the International Carnival Glass Association and the Texas Carnival Glass Association.
Richard was also an adventurer at heart. He loved showing his children and grandchildren the beauty of the world, taking them on trips across the country. Later in life, he and Carol explored the globe, visiting 60 countries and immersing themselves in the cultures and stories of the people they met.
Richard had a gift for conversation. He could engage anyone in hours-long discussions, sharing stories, exchanging ideas, and finding common ground. His love for connecting with others and sharing experiences was evident to everyone who had the pleasure of speaking with him. He was known for his ability to listen, empathize, and inspire through his words.
Richard’s devotion to his wife, Carol, was unwavering. She was the center of his world, and his love for her was steadfast and unalterable. His commitment to Carol was an enduring example of what it means to be dedicated to a spouse, inspiring everyone who witnessed their profound bond. Richard’s greatest joy came from making Carol happy, whether through grand gestures or the simplest acts of kindness. For him, nothing in life was more important than her happiness and well-being. Their partnership was a beacon of mutual respect, deep affection, and support. Throughout their life together, Richard’s dedication to Carol remained sure, and his love for her was a constant source of strength and inspiration for everyone who knew them.
In his later years, Richard became a gentle and loving grandfather, finding immense joy in the company of his grandchildren. His warmth, humor, and wisdom left a lasting impression on the younger generations of his family.
