Rebecca "Becky" Sue Telfer

April 6, 1949 — May 3, 2021

Rebecca “Becky” Sue Telfer (nee Reese) was born April 6, 1949 in Carroll, Iowa to her parents T. Robert and Barbara Reese. She grew up in Onawa and Waterloo, Iowa, graduating from West Waterloo High School in 1967. Attending the University of Northern Iowa, she received her degree in Elementary Education in 1971. Her first job was teaching second grade in Ankeny, Iowa. Becky married William  “Bill” L Telfer, Jr on August 12, 1972, in Waterloo, Iowa.

Because of Bill's work, Becky resided in St. Louis Park, Minnesota; Palatine, Illinois; Morgantown, West  Virginia; Augusta, Georgia; Hanover Park, Illinois and finally in Plano, Texas for the last 39 years. For 20 years she was a substitute teacher at Plano ISD, treasuring her assignments in grades 1 -3.

Because of her love of music, Becky played her clarinet in the high school marching and concert bands and sang in her church choir. She passed her love of music on to both of her boys and was a parent volunteer with both of their high school and college marching bands. She also was the “tour mom” and historian for many a choir tour with Custer Road United Methodist Church – preserving memories into scrapbooks from 1986 through 2019.

She was an avid Things To-Do Today (TTDL) List maker. Sometimes to the extent that she would put something on her TTDL just so she could cross it out. She enjoyed cleaning her house and doing laundry.  Although she liked to say “cooking is not my favorite, but I do it anyway”, notecards with her hand written recipes are treasured in kitchens across the country – particularly her banana bread and corn casserole.

While not much of a sports fan in her youth, she grew to enjoy soccer, football, lacrosse, hockey, and basketball in support of her boys. She became an avid Baylor Bear fan because of Will and a spirited TCU Horned Frog fan because of Michael.

Becky was many things after college, a teacher, a bank teller, a hospital administrative assistant, an American Greetings Card employee, a sales associate with a friend's company, and a substitute teacher.  Her best, favorite, and most rewarding responsibility was as a wife and mother. Because of her caring  and loving nature, she was a favorite of the band, choir, and sports kids, and the teachers and adults that she was around. Many of her sons’ friends called her ‘Mom’.

Becky would sum herself up in three words: Bears, Baskets, and Blue. Those who knew her would choose differently: Generous, Loving, and Supportive.

She is survived by her sons, William L Telfer III (Jean) of Waco, Texas and Michael Robert Telfer (Mekensey) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; brother, Barry Robert Reese (Kayla) of Indianola, Iowa; grandsons, Preston and Reese and her granddaughter, Charlotte.

In remembrance of Becky Telfer’s life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
