Randy Roten was called a “Renaissance Man” by some because of his many interests and professions. Farmer, rancher, English teacher, football coach at Duncanville, Pampa, Cedar Hill, Bishop Lynch, Rockwall, and Northwood University, auctioneer for non-profits, bank director for two Texas banks, college professor, university provost, collector of arts and antiques, restorer of homes, and restorer of buildings in Venus, Texas including his grandfather’s bank building.
A graduate of Sunset High School, Randy attended McMurry University on a football scholarship. He played quarterback, was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, served as president of his fraternity and graduated with honors. He received a graduate degree from Southern Methodist University.
Randy was the oldest son born to Margaret Ruth Fern Meek and Jackson Randolph Roten on May 31, 1939, in Sweetwater, Texas. He left this world on June 6, 2025, at the age of 86, and is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Merle Ann Hood, and two children, Rex and Renee, two brothers William Eugene (Pam) and Charles Jackson Roten, and nieces and nephews.
