Nahm Sook-Kyung Mathieu

Mar 6, 1940 — Oct 23, 2026

Plano, Texas

Nahm Sook-Kyung “Sue” Mathieu was born in Seoul, Korea March 6, 1940, to her parents, Chang Woo “Andrew” Nahm and Sal Ah “Sarah” Kim. Her elder brother, Ki Kyoung Nahm and sister Hae Kyoung Nahm, both preceded her in death.

Having been raised in Korea, as a young lady, she attended and graduated from Han Kook Sam Yook Academy for her secondary education. Following her younger school years, she pursued her passion for music, especially piano and organ playing. Soon after, she moved to Michigan, United States with her family, where her father pursued his PhD in Asian Studies at Andrews University, and later became the head professor of Asian Studies at Michigan State University. Sue studied music interpretation, keyboards, and music education at Western Michigan University where she earned her PhD in music education.

Following that, she moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina, where she accepted the role of Music Director of the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Center for Religion and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Chapel at Ft. Bragg, where she led the music program for Protestant and Catholic services offered at the Chapel. She further offered language speaking education and translation services, while in the service of the U.S. Army. Sue and her skills were highly appreciated, and she was recognized to be a very industrious individual, receiving Department of the Army Letters of appreciation from then commander of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, Brigadier General Michael D. Healy, for her dedicated service to the support of religious activities at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Chapel and to her dedicated service to the John F. Kennedy Language Institute.

Later in life, Sue dedicated her life to teaching music education and piano/organ to individual students, and at the Richardson Seventh Day Adventist Academy for more than twenty-five years. Over her entire life Sue was heavily involved in church affairs as a devoted Seventh Day Adventist. She was instrumental in the formation and development of new and existing Korean church congregations and served on the Executive Board of the Seventh day Adventist Conference in Keene, Texas. Sue also served her local church, the Richardson Seventh Day Adventist Church in multiple capacities, such as children, youth, and adult choirs, Hand Bell Choir Director and served as the Community Service Director for many years.

In her personal life, Sue was a loving, kind and generous person who loved everyone with everyone loving her. She formed many lifelong friendships and shared all the ups

and downs that life brings to us all. She was generous with her time and her love of entertaining with her warm home, filled with food and music. She had a particular passion for growing things in her garden and greenhouses. You could well describe her as having a “green thumb” in that all the decorative plants, flowers, vegetables she grew responded to her attention and flourished. She imbued everything around her with love that was always with her no matter where she went, and it came to her with caring thoughts from her heart. We will all miss her and cherish her memory for ever.

Sue is survived by her husband, Leo Mathieu; sons Sherman Mathieu and his wife Kelly and David Mathieu and his wife Gail, six grandchildren Emmaly, Allena Grace, Nathan, David, Sara, and Mark.

Leo and Sue were married on June 4, 1971, and they lived a life full of love, music, and family for 55 wonderful years.
