Mulkey Carl Wilkes was born March 28, 1929 in Happy, Texas to parents Herbert S. and Alice Wilkes and went to be with His Lord and Savior, May 22, 2018.
Carl graduated from Happy High School and Texas Tech University. He worked for nearly 40 years as a Chemist for PPG Industries and Cain Chemical. He had at least one US patent in his name.
Carl devoted himself to serving God through his family and the church. He was an active deacon in every church in which he was a member and served in a variety of ways, including running a TV camera, weekly visitation, mission trips, bus ministry, and being responsible for the baptistry.
Carl showed compassion toward others by serving at the church, Meals on Wheels and by driving senior adults to various appointments. He gave generously to needs through his church and taught his children the importance of giving to others. He was a kind man who exemplified servant leadership in his home, church and workplace.
In Carl’s spare time, he volunteered in the Civil Air Patrol to assist in search and rescue missions after he received his private pilot’s license. He also served as a High School football referee for over 25 years. After retirement, he raised a small herd of cattle on land in East Texas and was an active member of the Texas Farm Bureau and an Election Judge.
Carl was a devoted husband to Phyllis Jean (Selvidge) Wilkes, his high school sweetheart, for 68 years and a devoted father to his five children, 9 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, Jean Wilkes; children: LaVona Wilkes, Gene (Kim) Wilkes, Brenda (Mike) Johnson, Beverly (Joel) Dillard, and Barbara (Rodney) Mobley; a brother Donald (Pat) Wilkes and a sister, Lenora (Jack) Starnes. Carl’s older brother, Odell Wilkes and his wife, Jimmie, have preceded Carl to Heaven.
Funeral services to honor and celebrate Carl’s life will be held at Legacy Church, 4501 Legacy Dr. Plano, Texas, 75024 on Friday, May 25 at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Carl will be laid to rest in Happy, Texas.
