Martha Joyce Moseley, beloved teacher, baker, and woman of God, passed away on March 21, 2023 at her home in Plano, Texas at the age of 71 after her seven year battle with transitional cell cancer. Martha was born on November 5, 1951 in Dallas, Texas to parents Leslie and Gladys McCreary.
Martha’s homemaking interests were developed on the family farm in Parker, Texas. She won several awards for her prowess in baking and sewing. Martha won top prize in dress making from 4H at the county and state levels for outfits she designed and crafted by hand. Praised as the reason “tomorrow is in good hands,” she demonstrated impressive talent in baking and food conservation to all those around her and won a college scholarship for her impressive Dilly bread. Martha graduated from Plano High School with an astonishing feat few can replicate – perfect attendance for all of grades 1 - 12. Clearly this was a woman who, once her mind was set, could accomplish anything!
After graduating from Texas Women's University, she began her 30 year teaching career at Plano ISD. In 1975 (Thanksgiving week, no less!), she married Wallace G Moseley (Wally), a single father, embracing four children as her own. Martha parented with compassion, love, and tenderness. The Lord blessed her with two more sons, increasing her brood to six. Throughout their marriage, Martha faithfully served each church body Wally was called to. He pastored many small churches in which she cleaned, taught, baked, counseled, sang in the choir, and folded bulletins. She was a woman who faithfully served Christ by serving others. Her commitment to the church continued on well after Wally’s death, where she continued to generously pour her heart into the lives at Forest Grove Church.
As the years went by, Martha would maintain an open and inviting home to all, and the holidays were especially memorable at the Moseley house. As her children grew and began raising kids of their own the ever-expanding size of the family never posed too big a challenge for Martha. Thanksgiving always offered a bountiful meal ready for everyone, complete with her signature desserts. At Christmas time there would be a stocking for every member of the family, which has grown to nearly 45, at this time! In the kitchen you would find snacks and treats baked for everyone, carefully taking into account the favorites, requests, and dietary needs of all, which is no simple task for such a large gathering.
Martha lived out her faith through steadfast love. She sought to accept others freely and love actively. She gave generously, mothered faithfully, and exuded optimism. Family was valued and she sacrificed abundantly to entertain and include the young ones. Solid work ethic spilled out of her as she taught constantly. Martha always made sure those under her tutelage knew how to do things correctly and pay attention to detail. From simple tasks like cleaning to intricate designs on clothing or cakes, she was always willing to pass on her knowledge.
Speaking of cakes! Martha made cakes for an innumerable amount of events and people. Able to craft the perfect decorations by hand, over the course of many years, she would make the wedding cakes for almost her entire extended family, birthday cakes for almost every year of the children and grandchildren’s childhoods, and special holidays. You need a bunny for Easter that also doubles as a birthday cake for the 6 family members with birthdays in April? Can do! Starship Enterprise from memory? No problem! Elaborate floral pattern on a 5-tier wedding cake with matching groom’s chocolate cake? Check. It just might be impossible to accurately recount how many people invited Martha into their lives’ historic events simply by virtue of her baking skill.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents Leslie and Gladys McCreary, her twin sister, Brenda Loyce McCreary, her husband Wallace Moseley, and daughter Sidney Moseley, affectionately called Dottie, and her grandson, Travis Moseley. She is survived by her sister, Zada Nicholson, her children and their spouses Patrice & Don Frazier, Cindy & David Harvey, Guy & Myka Moseley, Wes & Lisa Moseley, and Greg & Becky Moseley, her 23 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
