Margaret "Peg" Stiles

August 11, 1934 — April 17, 2023

Margaret (Peg) Stiles was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky on August 11, 1934, to Richard Nelson Atwell and Ethel May Layton Atwell.  She was the 6th child of eight children. The family relocated to historic Lawyers Hill in Elkridge, Maryland shortly before her father was deployed to Europe in World War II where he served until the end of the war. She often expressed how grateful she was for the childhood she had with her brothers and sisters enjoying tennis, swimming in natural creeks, evening baseball games and the freedom to enjoy these activities with one another. She was a member of the last graduating class to be held at Elkridge High School in 1952. Her diploma was handed to her by her father, who was the President of Howard County Board of Education. She was a member of the Maryland Diocesan Youth Choir performing monthly on WBAL-TV in Baltimore with many friends, prior to graduation.

Peg attended Towson State University and went on to have a successful career with the Department of Defense and the National Security Agency as a Program Analyst in Engineering Research and Development. She was proud of her work and the missions she was involved in until she retired. Peg was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grand and great grandmother and a dear friend to many over the years after relocating to Chester County, Pennsylvania, Potomac, Maryland, Los Altos, California and Bethesda, Maryland with her husband's corporate moves. She was active in the Republican party, most recently in Collin County, Texas. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, she was an avid golfer; a winning golf team member at Congressional Country Club, enjoyed tennis, bowling, reading, playing piano and entertaining. She was a Past Chairman of the Women’s Golf Association at Congressional Country Club for 2 years. She continued to retain those friendships and many others across the United States. She was a cradle Episcopalian and served on Altar Guilds for many years until she was no longer able.  In 2010, she became a member of the Church of Holy Communion, Cathedral, Diocese of Mid-America (REC) Anglican Church of North America, Dallas, Texas. She was a Lifetime Member of the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association, The North Texas USNAA Chapter, The Phoenix Society (NSA,) Newcomer Friends of Greater Plano, Gals in Golf Plano, Texas, Military Officer Association of America and Greater Dallas Chapter MOAA. Past member of ARCS Foundation (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) in Washington, D.C.

Peg was preceded in death by the love of her life Charles Lawrence Stiles, USNA Class of 1949 - (the wait is over, and they are together again). She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Florence Louise Waldman and Barbara Jean Atwell and her brothers William Layton Atwell and Thomas Wilkinson Atwell.

She is survived by her children Pamela Rosener (Ron), Timothy Stiles (Julie), Sandy Collins (Michael), Donna Stiles and Charles Stiles. Also surviving are her grandchildren and great grandchildren Marla, Ashley, Jackie, Nick, Clark, Grant, Eric, Haley, Tim, Cade, Olivia, Liam, Hanna, Gemma, Caleb and Luke.

Peg is also survived by her brother Richard Nelson Atwell, Jr. (Mary) of Clarksville, Maryland, sisters Mary Atwell Nichols of Elkridge, Maryland and The Rev. Miriam Atwell Mathews also of Elkridge, Maryland. Additionally, many cousins, nieces, nephews in Maryland, Pennsylvania, California and Florida.
