Lucy Horn Montemurro

November 13, 1934 — April 3, 2023

Lucy Elizabeth Montemurro (nee Horn) entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Monday, April 3, 2023, holding the hands of her sons Michael and Stephen.

Lucy was born at home on November 13, 1934, in rural Inez, Kentucky in the Appalachian Mountains. She was the tenth of twelve children born to William Earl and Carola (Hensley) Horn.

A fiercely loving woman, protective of her family, which included her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces, and nephews, all of whom returned that love just as fiercely. She has been described by a grandson as the American definition of a grandma, cooking from scratch and ensuring everyone had full bellies and happy hearts, and by several nieces as more of a second mom than an aunt.

Lucy started her work life as a telephone operator. In the almost exclusively male-dominated world of Information Technology professionals of the early 1980s, she was a pioneer in the work of IT and networking. She was a Systems Store Specialist for Eckerd Drugs, later for a division of IBM installing networked cash registers for their pharmacies. Her territory covered Texas and Oklahoma. She was promoted to manager and earned a lifetime achievement award.

She was an accomplished ballroom/social and square dancer. It was Lucy's love of square dancing that led her to meet her husband, Richard, whom she married in 1990. Together they traveled far and wide to Square Dance competitions, events, and conventions. Her collection of Square Dance dresses was elaborate, containing many beautiful outfits she created and sewed herself.

Lucy is survived by her husband Richard Montemurro, sons Michael J. Marrero and Mark Stephen Marrero, grandchildren Lucy Marrero, Christina Marrero, Mark Marrero Jr., Paul Marrero Jr., Joel Marrero, Caitlyn Marrero, and Asher Marrero, and three great-grandchildren, Jasmine Todd, Vincent Silva, and Maya Marrero-Howieson, one great great grandchild, sister Thelma Jean Cremeans, brother H. Ray Horn, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Paul Marrero Jr., her parents, sisters Hazel Whitt, MaryJane Fisher, Zetta Endicott, Florence Harmon, Armelda Eppler, Essie Stein, and Shirley Thomas, and her brothers Lloyd Horn and Drewey Horn.
