Larry Harvey

May 20, 1953 — October 7, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lawrence (Larry) Bernard Harvey, Jr. of McKinney, Texas who died on Monday, October 7, 2024, after a short battle with cancer. He was 71 years old.

Larry was born on May 20, 1953, in Pasadena, Texas to Lawrence Sr. and Louise (Looper) Harvey. He spent most of his early years traveling around the world as an Air Force brat, where he developed the love of country and sense of service that would drive him for the rest of his life. His family eventually settled in Oklahoma, where he graduated from Dell City High School in 1971.

Larry joined the Army at the first opportunity and served honorably for 21 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant and recipient of the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and an Army Superior Unit Award, among his many other awards and decorations. He then served for an additional 26 years with the Department of Defense, for which he received the Department of the Army Superior Civilian Service Award, Meritorious Civilian Service Award, and the Thomas Knowlton Award for his contributions to the field of Military Intelligence, finally retiring from public service in 2018.

Larry met his beloved wife Elaine in San Antonio, Texas where they were both stationed at the time. The two married on April 5, 1977, and remained together until his death 47 years later. He was the proud father of Candace Coffee (married to Ty) and Colin Harvey (married to Mallory), and loving grandfather of Addison and Crighton Coffee. He is also survived by his brother, Marc Harvey, his sister, Karen Millard, and his many nieces and nephews.

After retirement, Larry and Elaine decided to move back to Texas to be closer to their grandchildren. He then channeled his love of music, learning, and tinkering with electronics into a role with the audio-visual team at Cross Road Christian Church, spending much of his free time honing his new craft and taking related courses at Collin County Community College. Through his service and newfound community within the church he developed a relationship with Jesus Christ and was baptized on January 22, 2023.

Larry is remembered for his demeanor, no-nonsense attitude, and fierce loyalty to that which he held dear. He leaves behind a legacy of service and strength.

A memorial service will be held in his honor at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Cross Road Christian Church, McKinney, Texas.
