Katie Wassberg Guiou

May 4, 1975 — July 27, 2023

Katie Wassberg Guiou, age 48, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023, in Scottsdale, Arizona.  While her home was in Plano, Texas, Katie was in Arizona for a clinical trial treatment for cancer.

Katie was born in 1975 in Southfield, Michigan on May 4, 1975, to Charles and Beverly Wassberg.  Katie then lived in Van Wert Ohio from the ages of 2 months to 6 years old when the Wassberg family moved to Texas in 1981.  While she was born in Michigan, she was a true Texan at heart.  Katie graduated from Plano Senior High School in 1993 and the University of Texas in 1997.

She loved theatre and cherished her days of being part of Olympics of the Mind at Vines. In college, she loved her AXO sisters and was a member of the Texas Cowgirls.  She always took pride in being a Texas Longhorn.  Her professional career was focused on the commercial insurance industry where she earned the coveted CPCU designation.  Katie simply excelled at everything she did.

Katie was a loving wife and mother, devoted daughter and sister, outstanding friend and employee, former marathoner, youth theater volunteer and most importantly a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ.

Katie was diagnosed with Mucosal Melanoma, a very rare cancer of the mucous membranes that makes up less than 1% of annually reported cancer cases.  The odds for survival from Mucosal Melanoma are long and the typical time of survival for patients is short.  Katie endured every available treatment option for the possibility of more months and years with her friends and family.

Katie is not defined by her cancer, but by her courage and steadfast love and trust in a Healing and Merciful God.  She made deep impact on others in every aspect of her life with her shining blue eyes, dazzling smile and her positive, can-do attitude.

Katie is survived by her husband of 24 years, Jim Guiou; children Andrew, Luke and Sara; parents Chuck and Beverly Wassberg, Plano, Texas; siblings Greg Wassberg and his wife Shannon, Grapeland, Texas, Brad Wassberg and his wife Stephanie, McKinney, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will receive friends for a visitation from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Sunday, August 6, 2023, at Allen Family Funeral Options.

The funeral service for Katie Guiou will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 7, 2023, at Christ Church Plano, 4550 Legacy Dr., Plano, Texas; officiated by The Very Rev. Paul Donison.

There will be a reception in the fellowship hall following the service.
