On September 23, 2026, the Plano community lost a generous and bright light with the passing of Kathleen “Kathy” Kay Schell.
Born on December 23, 1958, in El Paso, Texas, Kathy lived a vibrant life centered around service, kindness, and devotion to those she loved. Known for her ever-present smile and altruistic spirit, she was a dedicated community volunteer who touched countless lives. Kathy gave generously of her time and talents to numerous organizations, including the Women's Auxiliary to Children's Medical Center Plano, the Junior League of Collin County, the Journey of Hope Grief Support Center, and the Plano ISD Education Foundation, among many others.
Beyond her work in the community, Kathy embraced life’s everyday pleasures, like loving on her dogs over the years and finding new sushi spots with her husband for date night. She also had an extraordinary passion for decorating, joyfully transforming the house for every season and holiday—most especially Christmas, which she made magical for everyone around her. When she wasn't decorating, Kathy loved getting lost in a good book on the beach, playing games, and catching up over drinks with the girls. Above all else, her greatest joy was simply spending time with her family, gathering everyone together for Sunday dinners and enjoying the laughter around her (not to mention the good food).
Kathy is survived by her devoted husband, Jim Schell; children, Ryan and Allyson, and their spouses Amanda and Taylor; mother, Barbara King; grandchildren, Ava and Ryder; and brothers Kent and Jimmy, and their wives Debbie and Terry. She was preceded in death by her father, Jim King.
A visitation will be held from 9-10:00 a.m., Monday, October 5, 2026, at Allen Family Funeral Options followed by a celebration of her life at 10:00.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in honor of Kathy Schell to support the Women's Auxiliary Patient Cart at Children's Medical Center Plano, a service very close to her heart.
