Joyce "Minnie" Burns

August 28, 1928 — July 21, 2024

Joyce Burns was born August 28, 1928, in Itasca, Texas to parents Cecil and Mattie Lou Douglas.

Joyce attended Itasca High School and was a proud member of the Itasca Wampus Cat cheerleader team.  She and her family attended the local Baptist Church.

After Joyce graduated from high school, the family moved to Grand Prairie, Texas where she worked at a bank as a teller.   It was at the bank that her future husband, Bob Burns, a Texas native and World War II vet walked in.    They immediately hit it off and started dating.  Joyce and Bob married in 1947.  Joyce was 19.

Over the next many years, Joyce and Bob moved to different cities around the state due to his job as a patrolman for the Texas Dept. of Public Safety.

Joyce and Bob had two children, Mike and Cheri.   When the kids were born, Joyce was a full-time stay at home mom.  She was a really loving Mother and according to her children she became the 'Best Cook' ever!   Fried chicken, Sweet Tea, Cookie Dough and her world-famous Lemon Pie were always around the house.

The family settled in Hurst, Texas for many years, where the kids went to school and Joyce made sure the entire family attended church on Sunday.   After the kids graduated from high school, Joyce worked for her brother-in-law who was a doctor.  After her children got jobs and moved on, Joyce always made sure everyone in the family had a great home to visit.

Joyce and Bob were married 59 years until his passing in 2006.

Later in life, she and a group of friends made it a point to get together often for keno and games. On occasion she would travel with friends across the state and country.   She also took pride in paying attention to Lifetime movies.  Mike, his wife Debbie and Cheri would watch them with her and inevitably Joyce was the first person to figure out who the real bad guy was!

She was also a huge football fan, both pro and college.  Each week during the season, she would watch games all day.   Never getting bored. Her son Mike would say "She's the only person that will watch football with me for 12 hours on Sunday!"

Joyce, known to her family as Minnie, also greatly loved her grandson Tony, his wife Caysi and their children Gunner, Poppi and Jett.

A private burial will be held at the Dallas/Ft Worth National Cemetery, Dallas, Texas.
