Joseph "Joe" C Ligon

Joseph Calhoun Ligon was born in El Paso, Texas on October 16, 1935 to parents Alford Edward Ligon and Willie Jo (Darracott) Ligon. His early years were spent in Marfa, Texas where his parents had an insurance agency. After graduation from Marfa High School, he attended UTEP in El Paso, Texas and Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas where he graduated with a BA degree. After graduation from Sul Ross State, Joe proudly served two years in the U.S Army and two years in the Army Reserve.

Joe was exposed to the field of insurance in his parent’s business and began working in that field as a Special Agent at Cravens Dargan in Houston, Texas. He then worked at a local insurance agency. His career led him to Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation where he was an Assistant Manager and later Manager of the Insurance Department. While there, he attended the University of Houston where he studied for the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters (CPCU) designation. He received that designation in 1972. He continued his studies of insurance and received the designation of Risk Manager (RM). After Joe left Texas Eastern he worked as Risk Manager at Weatherford International. He then moved to Dallas and became Vice President of Risk Management at H. L. Hunt Family Trusts. He retired in the 90’s and lived in Plano, Texas and later The Colony, Texas.

In his 30’s Joe was aware of a problem with alcohol and his friends introduced him to AA. He became very involved with the AA Program and had over 40 years of sobriety. He worked to help others though the Program and was still active at the time of his passing.

Joe married Mary Frances Krouse in Houston, Texas, in 1961. Joe is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Judith Elaine Ligon-Bridges and Thomas Bridges of Little Elm, Texas, son and daughter-in-law Gregory Scott Ligon and Lisa Moreno-Ligon of Plano, Texas. He is also survived by three grandchildren Kathryn Marie Ligon, Hannah Grace Ligon and Miranda Faith Ligon of Plano, Texas, and former wife Mary Frances Trott of Point Blank, Texas.

The family will receive friends for a visitation Sunday, January 14, 2018 from 3:00-5:00 P.M. at the Allen Family Funeral Options. A funeral service to celebrate Joe’s life will be held Monday, January 15, 10:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church, 3160 E. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, Texas 75074. Interment will follow at 1:15 P.M. at DFW National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas.
