Joseph (Joe) Horan was born on November 6, 1949, to Thomas and Freda Horan in Lake Forest, Illinois. After graduating from Carmel High School in Mundelein, Illinois, he went on to Quincy College for a short time before transferring to St. Louis University where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. A year before graduating, he entered the Marine reserves and finished his accounting degree after his military training.
On August 8th, 1970, Joe married his sweetheart, Julie. His first job after graduation was with the department store Famous Barr in St. Louis. After their son David was born, he accepted a position with Sanger Harris Department Store in Dallas, Texas. After the birth of their daughter Bridget, he went on to learn computer technology at St. Regis Paper Company. He subsequently worked at Haggar clothing doing computer programming and management. His final career move was to what would become CVS Caremark as a systems analyst for the pharmacy benefits division before retiring in 2016.
Joe was known for his love of model trains and always had a train display in the works. He was involved in the YMCA Adventure Guides and Adventure Princess programs with both of his children. He was active in Cub Scouts and became a den leader for his son, Dave’s troop. His favorite scouting activities were the overnight campouts which gave him the opportunity to cook breakfast over a campfire. He also helped coach Dave and Bridget’s YMCA basketball teams.
Joe was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus council 8954 at his church, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Richardson, Texas. He twice served as their Grand Knight and led their first-degree team. One of his favorite projects was to organize chili cook-offs for his council. His favorite sport was golf, and he orchestrated a number of charity golf tournaments for his K of C chapter.
Joe is survived by his wife of 54 years, Julie, his daughter Bridget Horan of Plano, Texas, and his son David and his wife Leigha and grandchildren, Ainsley, Leighton, and Tom of Richardson, Texas, and his sister, Sandra Shimanek of Port St. Lucie, Florida.
