John Michael Penaska

June 12, 1986 — May 25, 2017

Michael Penaska’s life story began when he was born in San Antonio, Texas on June 12, 1986. Though his parents, Sharon and John Penaska would divorce a few years later. Both of his parents would remarry and he went from an only child to one of many with two families. Michael spent his early grade school years in North Carolina and returned to Texas for high school. His early interest and training in music paid off as he went on to become a first chair clarinet player. He was the drum major at Richardson High School for two years—a rare feat, since usually drum majors serve only during their senior years. He also was selected to play in the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra on clarinet for all three of his high school years, proudly riding the DART system to rehearsals before he was able to drive—showing off his independence! He graduated from Richardson High in 2004 in the top ten of his class, and he was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Texas at Dallas. Michael completed his college studies in four years and almost immediately went to work in Information Technology as a database administrator. Maybe it was a genetic thing as he almost followed in his father’s career footsteps. In fact, over the years, the two worked together on many projects. Michael was acknowledged as one of the best in his field. Michae retained his love of music—for all types of music, from classical to jazz to alternative rock. He loved to sing; he would sing along wit performers on stage and even had leading roles in musicals during his college years. He enjoyed physical activities. There was a summer not long ago that was full of kayaking and he climbed many a rock wall. He often spent time with his nieces and nephews. And he danced with nieces Rowan and Aiden (with their feet off the floor) for too many dances to count at their grandparent’s anniversary party. Michael liked to please people. Sometimes maybe he would try a little too hard to please you, to do too much what he thought you wanted him to do—he was a gentle man. A truly gentle man. He liked to cook. He was learning all different cuisines, all different cultural ways of entertaining with food. New ingredients, new ways of presentation. He was a charming host, wanting people to be at home. He had a special place in his heart for Jen. She helped him through many trials and rough times. And she was often his Yoga and rock wall climbing partner. Michael will be missed. He left us too soon. His promise is unfulfilled. We are all the poorer for his passing.
