On Friday, July 16, 2021, John Francis Moen, loving husband, brother, and father of four passed away at the age of 76 years old.
John was born on February 18, 1945 to Andrew and Eileen Moen in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up alongside his three brothers Andrew, Lawrence, and Christopher Moen.
He graduated from Archbishop Malloy High School in Brooklyn, New York in 1963. Shortly after graduating, he followed his beloved nation’s call to serve, and proudly enlisted into the United States Army. Between 1966-1967, under the 1 st Infantry Division’s 3 rd Brigade Combat Team, he served as a determined and brave Medic in the Vietnam War. After his time overseas, he returned stateside where he studied at San Diego State University. In 1973, he received his bachelor degree for Management Information Systems. With this education, he worked for the government to help develop the Medicare/Medicaid System throughout the nation and also worked various consulting jobs throughout his time.
In 1978, he became a father to his eldest child, Sean Voegeli. In 1987, he met his soon-to-be wife Sylvia Paez, who was then working as the Nanny to his brother Lawrence, and his wife Ursula’s children. They married on April 23, 1988, in Orlando, Florida in front of many friends and family- and a few Disney characters. Together they raised three children- Kathleen, John, and Christina, in Plano, Texas.
Throughout his full and extraordinary life, John picked up a variety of passions and hobbies. They ranged from surfing the biggest wave that he could possibly find to building computers from scratch. Growing up he sang in his school and church’s choir, which developed into a lifelong love for music- according to him, he was blessed with a “gifted” voice. He regularly attended and coached all of his children’s soccer games, where he was usually on the field coaching the referees. He loved traveling the country and taking long road trips where he could take in the view as well as make new friends along the way. He was always looking for a new adventure.
He was known for his incredible intellect, his infectious laugh, and his ability to make everyone feel like a part of the family. He deeply cared for and loved all of his family and friends. He had a tenacity and fire for all aspects of his life and would extend that energy everywhere he went.
John Francis Moen was preceded in death by his father Andrew, his mother Eileen, and his brother Andrew. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; children, Sean, Kathleen, John and Christina; brothers, Lawrence and Christopher; grandchildren, Kylee and Finn; cousins and countless nieces and nephews.
