John B Mills, Jr.

John Bierne Mills, Jr. - a pilar of his family - passed away peacefully on Friday, May 24, 2024, at a local hospital near his home in Frisco, Texas.  He was 77 years old.

John was born on September 17, 1946, in Albuquerque, New Mexico to the late John B. Mills Senior and Faye (Winkels) Mills.

A devoted husband, father and “Granddaddy,” John’s greatest joy came from his family.  He leaves behind his beloved wife of 54 years, Rita, and their two children: Brett, his wife Sara, along with their children Blake and Hannah; and Lindsay, her husband Jason, and their children, Talon and Madeleine.  John adored his grandchildren and embraced every opportunity to spend time with them.  He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Vicki Mills, and stepbrother, Sam Chase and his wife Linda, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded by his brother, Chuck Mills, and stepbrother, Eddie Chase.

John’s legacy includes a strong dedication to education and service.  He graduated magna cum laude from Texas Tech University with a degree in Business Administration.  After graduation, his professional career flourished in Fort Worth, where he worked at Ernst & Ernst and became a CPA.  He later moved to Dallas and joined the accounting firm of McCarthy Rose, where he was well respected by his many clients.  John went on to become partner and the firm was renamed McCarthy, Rose & Mills LLP.  He was a hands-on type of guy, working many extra hours to accommodate those in need.  He was a member of the AICPA, TSCPA, a Certified Fraud Examiner; he was a Mason, a Hella Shriner, and a proud Alpha Tau Omega – ATO fraternity member.

John loved coaching and watching his two children in their many activities.  He also enjoyed fishing and hunting deer, quail or dove, as well as training his English pointers.  John was a loyal Texas Rangers fan and was honored by the Texas Rangers in the Quarter Century Club as he held season tickets for over 40 years.

John had a passion for the ocean. He enjoyed sailing the West Indies, Caribbean, Mediterranean, and French Polynesia. He was an avid scuba diver and achieved the level of PADI Instructor.  Sailing and diving became a family affair, and many vacations were centered around a beautiful blue ocean.

John lived a full life, deeply loving his family, dear friends, travel and good food.  He will be missed by many.
