John Paul Meulbroek, Paul to his childhood family and friends, John in his adult years,
was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on Labor Day 1944 to John Meulbroek and Irene
Johnson Meulbroek. When Paul was seven, he and his family moved from Sheboygan
to Denver, Colorado in an attempt to find relief from his mother’s severe allergies. In
Denver, Paul attended Asbury Elementary, Grant Junior High, and South High Schools
and became a member of the U.S. Navy Reserve. Upon graduation, Paul joined the
Navy and served in the 1960s. Upon discharge, John moved first to Wisconsin, then to
Missouri before settling in the Dallas area. He worked in manufacturing, becoming an
electronics test technician while also attending Richland Community College. He
preferred the night shift and worked that schedule throughout most of his life.
In 1996 John married Sang Son Mellnick and together they established a home in
Garland, Texas. He worked on and modified their house with the goal of making it
relatively maintenance free. He also built computers for family and friends. Sang’s
daughter Tina and sons Bobby and Steven welcomed John and became his family.
John and Sang celebrated 25 years of marriage on September 17, nine days before he
entered the hospital for his final bout with cardiac issues and diabetes.
A quiet, steady man, John was a lover of vehicles both practical and fast. He owned a
series of Miatas, Mustangs, and pickup trucks. Proudly acknowledging that a vegetable
never passed his lips, John preferred Kit Kats, diet Pepsi, Peanut M&Ms, and Lay’s
potato chips.
John leaves his wife Sang and her children Tina and her husband Greg Church of Allen,
Texas; Bobby Mellnick and his wife Haruna of Tokyo, Japan, and Steven Mellnick and
his wife Sally of Pittsburg, Kansas. He will also be missed by his sister Kathleen Hatt of
Henniker, New Hampshire and his niece Rachel Hibbard of Sacramento, California.
