He was born on March 20, 1948, in Providence, Rhode Island. He had many happy memories of growing up on the east side of Providence and summers spent in Narragansett swimming and boating in the Atlantic. An outstanding hockey player at Hope High School in Providence and Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, New Hampshire, Jim played hockey professionally for the Rhode Island Reds, the Johnstown Jets and the Green Bay Bobcats. After retiring from hockey, Jim remained in Green Bay to work first for Peoples Marine Bank and then Packerland Packing Company. In 1986, he moved to Texas with Swift Independent. He subsequently joined Price Waterhouse as a director and then worked in banking software development for Hogan Systems and Computer Sciences Corp. He attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and obtained a master’s in business administration from Southern Methodist University.

Jim married Cathlynn Cannon in 1985. He had four children Patrick James McCaffrey (Michelle) of Altoona, Wisconsin, John Gilbert McCaffrey of Champaign, Illinois, James Owen Morgan McCaffrey Jr. of Plano, Texas and Anna Marguerite McCaffrey of Plano, Texas. When his children were young, he enjoyed coaching their teams and cheering on their athletic endeavors. An engaging storyteller, Jim loved to golf, boat, relax at his lake house in Mount Vernon, Texas and spend time with his many friends. He was a communicant at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Plano.

Besides his widow and children, Jim is survived by four grandchildren: Travis Peterson (Stephanie) of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Maya and Mason McCaffrey of Champaign, Illinois; and Elyse McCaffrey of Altoona, Wisconsin; three step-grandchildren: Jeremy Poirier (Brooke) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Justin Poirier (Courtney) of Appleton, Wisconsin; and Janessa Poirier of Indianapolis, Indiana and five step-great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his siblings Sister Lucia Treanor, a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist of Falls Church, Virginia; Lucy Elizabeth Dunne of Lexington, Kentucky; Maryann Knag (Paul) of New Canaan, Connecticut; and Thomas Michael Casey McCaffrey (Theresa) of Minneapolis, Minnesota. His parents, Dr. James Patrick McCaffrey and Lucy Casey McCaffrey, of Providence, Rhode Island preceded him in death.
