James Joseph Maltby, born on February 23, 1942, in Syracuse, New York to Leon James and Elizabeth (Kinsella) Maltby peacefully passed away on September 7, 2023, in Plano, Texas surrounded by his loving family.
Jim grew up in Solvay, New York and graduated from Le Moyne College with a BS in Mathematics. It was there that he met and married his wife, Charlotte. He spent 25 years working as a programmer and a developer for IBM at the Glendale Lab in Endicott, New York and the Boca Raton, Florida facility. He was key to the success of the OS2 deployment in Europe, Middle East and Asia. Upon retirement, Jim relocated to Plano, Texas to be nearer to his family.
Over the years, Jim had a variety of hobbies and interests including chip carving, stained glass, watercolor painting, bird houses, coins, designing and researching things to the max, planning summer programs for his grandkids, brain games, movies, reading, good food, chocolate, playing the lottery and a lifelong love of the Peanuts gang.
Later in life he could usually be found sitting in his stressless recliner, smoking his pipe, reminiscing about a past trip or planning a future one. He was a devoted and supportive husband and father who loved to hear about the doings of his family and was always ready to have a discussion, dispense thoughtful advice, tell a story, or pass out a $2 bill. His waffles were legendary. Fond memories and his gentle spirit will be with us always.
He is survived by Charlotte (Mahalick) Maltby, his devoted beloved wife of 61 years and his 5 children, Mary (John) Almasy of New Windsor, Maryland, Katherine (David) Lance of Plano, Texas, James (Katherine) Maltby of Tall Timbers, Maryland, Elizabeth (James) Harper of Keller, Texas, and Patricia Maltby of Plano, Texas. He will be dearly missed by his 10 grandchildren, Julie (Nate) Pfeiffer, Stephanie (Mike) Snyder, Ryan (Shannon) Lance, Andrew, John and Michael Lance, Megan and Joseph Harper, and Karly and Jaden Maltby and 3 great-grandchildren Calvin and Elsie Pfeiffer, and Olivia Snyder. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Maureen (Robert) Finn.
A memorial service will be held on November 11, 2023, at 11:00am at the Our Lady of Hope Chapel, St. Mary’s Cemetery in Syracuse, New York.
