Huey T. Mitchell, a retired salesman, wonderful man, and friend to many died, December 2, 2019 with his daughter, Denise Schneider and son-in-law, Brent by his side at Lifecare Center of Plano. He had been a resident there for 3 years.
Huey was born in Itasca, Texas in 1932 to William and Dovie Mitchell. He graduated from Pascal High School in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1950. He enlisted in the Navy and spent 4 years fighting in the Korean War. Huey married the love of his life Jo Helen Eubanks in 1957 and they adopted a daughter Anita at 4 years old. One year later they had a baby, Denise.
He worked for Ingersoll Rand Company as a salesman that took him to many places. Huey is a true Texan, he started his career in Houston but moved the family to Corning, New York, Spring, Texas, Bellmawr, New Jersey, Miami, Florida and Sao Paulo, Brazil. He loved to travel; any island was his favorite. Huey and Jo Helen even got to live in California, Louisiana and Oklahoma for his job. He could not stay away from Texas. He came home to retire in Lake Kiowa, Texas.
In all the moves gardening was what he loved. He loved doing yard work and he had a green thumb. His favorite flower was the Hibiscus. Everywhere they moved he would grow a hibiscus. He loved to get out on Saturday mornings and work in his yard. He loved Miami because he could do yard work all year round. He was able to travel to the Caribbean and South America for work which he loved. Working and living there brought out his love of the islands. He would have retired in Costa Rica if he could have. He enjoyed a laid-back lifestyle.
At 65, he retired and learned how to play golf. He enjoyed the golfing and fishing in Lake Kiowa, Texas. He had two great years and he suffered a stroke. He was a tough guy and he was not going to let that get him down. He powered back and strolled through life with a cane in his hand and joy in his heart.
The grip of the horrible disease, Alzheimer’s took hold of Jo Helen in 2002. Huey was a strong man and stood by her side even when she had to go to a nursing home. He was dedicated to her, by going every day to see her, rain or shine. He lost his love in 2005. Two of the people he was most proud of were his grandkids Grayson and Haley. They were the light of his eyes. He referred to them as “the boy” and “the girl”. They were shining stars to him. He loved the Cowboys and eating great food. The spicier the better. He enjoyed life to its fullest.
The last three years have been tough, and he would not have chosen to spend them in a nursing home, but he made the best of it. He brought joy and laughter everywhere he went, and it was appreciated at the nursing home. His love for his family and love of life is how he is going to be remembered. He is now with his love and rejoicing in heaven.
Huey is survived by daughter and son in law Denise and Brent Schneider; grandson Grayson Schneider and granddaughter Haley Schneider. He was preceded in death by his wife Jo Helen (Eubanks) Mitchell, two brothers and two sisters.
There will be a funeral service to celebrate Huey’s life Friday, December 13, 2019 at 12:00 (noon) at Allen Family Funeral Options with Dr. Keith Whitaker officiating.
Huey will be laid to rest with his wife Jo Helen Mitchell at the Dallas/Ft Worth National Cemetery, Dallas, Texas.
