Hock Thye Ong

Hock Thye Ong, known as Eddy to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2026, in Allen, Texas at the age of 69. He was a husband, loving father, and an exemplary geologist.

Born in British Hong Kong and raised in Malaysia, Eddy spent his early life there, where he met and married his wife, Nora. In 1991, their first and only child, Darryl, was born, and soon afterward, Eddy and his young family moved to America. After settling there, his career would take him to California before ultimately bringing him to Texas, where he would put down roots and remain for the rest of his life.

Eddy’s work as a geologist and his extensive travels, he instilled in his son a lifelong interest in geography and history. His son will forever credit him for inspiring that curiosity—and, perhaps less intentionally, for an ever-growing collection of books on World War II.

As his son grew older, Eddy spent time helping him move, providing transportation when necessary, and, in countless other ways, being a constant source of support.

Outside of his work, Eddy enjoyed windsurfing, motorcycling and, much later on, the simple pleasures of exploring the world from home by watching videos of city walks and food vlogs.

Eddy is survived by his wife, Nora Wong; son Darryl Ong and daughter-in-law Michelle; brother, Sam and his wife Carol; sister, Julia and her husband See Jeow; sister, Julie and her husband Bernard; and sister, Jenni and her husband Warren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lean and Yuen Ong.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate Eddy’s life at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Allen Family Funeral Options, Plano, Texas. With a reception to follow.

Eddy will be laid to rest at the Memorial Wall at the funeral home.
