Glenda Gail Hancock May was born December 2, 1941, in Evansville, Indiana and passed away peacefully January 19, 2025. She was the oldest child of Guy Fort Hancock and Glenn Adair (Hill) Hancock and was the joy of their lives. Glenda always considered herself a Native Texan, despite the misfortunate hiccup of being born in the Midwest.
Glenda's life was a journey of love, service and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
After graduating from Coolidge High School in 1960, she attended Sam Houston State College before fate intervened at Fort Parker State Park in 1961. There she met the love of her life, Richard Earl, and their whirlwind romance blossomed.
Their marriage on August 24,1963 led them on an exciting journey across the country, from the bayous of Louisiana to the cold winter of Massachusetts. They experienced the challenges of living away from family and ultimately felt the pull to return to their beloved Texas. They built a loving home in Plano, Texas for their May Girls in September 1973: Kristin Andrea May and Kimberly Adair May.
Glenda was a woman of strong faith, enduring strength, and a vibrant and courageous spirit. She was an active and faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Allen for over three decades. As a devoted disciple of Christ, she sat on numerous church boards and gave countless hours of service to guide and encourage others. Glenda understood the call to action her Lord and Savior asked of her and devoted much of her time spreading God's love and His Word.
Glenda's career reflected her passion for helping others. Beginning with teaching, to real estate, then serving as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Plano Chamber Orchestra and finally her fulfilling work with Allen (All) Community Outreach. She left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals with her compassion, her vision and her leadership. Her extraordinary lifelong belief was “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35.
As a driving force and well-known leader in both Plano and Allen, Glenda served as the Executive Director of Allen (All) Community Outreach from 1995-2016. She led the small non-profit from an information and referral agency and clothes closet to a thriving organization offering programs and services to prevent hunger and homelessness across Collin County, Texas.
Glenda’s greatest legacy was the love and support she showed to her devoted family. Her two granddaughters, Madelynn Gail Borchert and Grace Ann Borchert both shared a special and unbreakable bond with her. Madelynn gave her “Gran” great pride by working in Finance for a major financial company in Fort Worth, Texas. Grace Ann, lovingly called “Amazing Grace” by Glenda and other family members, brought her immense joy. Although Grace is non-verbal she made up the special name of “Woohoo” for her Gran.
Glenda will be deeply missed by her two daughters, Kristin Andrea May Planas and husband, Luis Alberto Planas of Daphne, Alabama and Kimberly Adair May of Plano, Texas; granddaughters, Madelynn Gail Borchert, Glenda’s namesake and Grace Ann Borchert, who were the light of Glenda’s life and her absolute joy. Luis Planas was the son she always wanted and they shared a special relationship. Mr. Buttons, her loyal and faithful fur baby, kept her company and never left her side during her illness.
Glenda will be greatly missed by her two younger sisters, Gaila Hancock Sanders and Mary Hancock Muns of Hillsboro, Texas; her dearest sister-in-law Peggy May and family of Corpus Christi, Texas; and loving family members throughout Texas and Louisiana. Many friends whose lives she touched will grieve for her and miss her fun parties and southern charm.
Glenda was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Glenn Hancock, her loving husband Richard Earl May, her infant child baby boy May, younger brother Hugh, two brothers-in-law, and many other extended family members.
Glenda will be buried in the family cemetery in Coolidge, Texas next to her beloved husband, Richard Earl, and her sweet baby boy May. Her closest family members will be in attendance.
Glenda was always the southern lady and consummate host. A Celebration of Life worship service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at First United Methodist Church of Allen- 601 S. Greenville, Allen, Texas. All are welcome to share in a luncheon in the church gymnasium immediately following her service from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.
In honor and support of her legacy, the family asks that donations be made to the ACO GLENDA MAY GIVING WALL https://www.acocares.org/donate/ or by mail to All Community Outreach, 801 E. Main Street, Allen, Texas 75002.
