Gerald "Derwin" Maberry

September 21, 1934 — December 5, 2021

Gerald “Derwin” Maberry was born September 21, 1934 in Hamlin, Texas to John and Flossie Maberry.
He grew up on a farm in McCaulley, Texas, where he played six-man football, graduating high school in
1953. On February 19, 1958 he married his bride, Frances Joan Kiser.

He worked as a manager for Safeway grocery stores in Abilene, Brady, and Richardson, TX before
moving his family to Allen, TX in 1972 to manage the local Dairy Queen. He later worked many years for
Mrs. Baird’s Bread as a supervisor and delivery driver before retiring in 1999.

Derwin was the unofficial ambassador of Allen as the manager of the Dairy Queen, the only gathering
spot in the small 1970s/1980s town. Running the Dairy Queen was a family affair, and many local
teenagers gained their first job experiences there. Throughout the years he held leadership roles in the
community, acting as the president of the Allen Band Booster Association and serving on various boards
for the City of Allen and committees at First United Methodist Church of Allen.

He enjoyed gardening, square-dancing, playing dominoes, traveling the countryside to eat catfish, and
socializing with people. Whether in his grocery store, at the Dairy Queen, on his bread route, at church,
or eating out in the community, he never met a stranger and made everyone feel welcome. His greatest
loves were his family, friends, dogs, growing vegetables, eating hamburgers, drinking Dr. Pepper, and
having a good laugh.

Derwin is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances, and their children: Patti Plumb of Allen, TX; Randy
and spouse Debbie Maberry of Van Alstyne, TX; Johnny and spouse Kelly Maberry of Melissa, TX; and
Cody and spouse Anita Maberry of North Richland Hills, TX. He is survived by grandchildren Hollie,
Denny, Jodi, Tyler, Melissa, Amanda, Tucker, Will, and Cooper. He is also survived by 10 great-
grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Allen, located at 601 S. Greenville Avenue,
Allen, TX on Thursday, December 9, 2021. Visitation begins at 1:00, followed by a celebration of life at
2:00 and burial at Allen Cemetery. A reception will be held directly afterward at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Derwin’s name to the International Rett Syndrome
Foundation at rettsydrome.org, or to the Alzheimer’s Association at act.alz.org.
