George John Haller V of Plano, Texas went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 16, 2020, surrounded physically and prayerfully by family and friends, due to complications from cancer. He was 61 years old.
His willingness to serve others selflessly, strike up conversations with strangers, and express joy in the face of trials persisted throughout his life – qualities that were magnified, not lessened, during his two plus-years of treatment after his diagnosis.
He was born to George John Haller IV and wife Doris (née Zelenski) on October 11, 1958 in Camden, New Jersey. George settled in Oklahoma after spending time in Arizona early in life. In 1981, he married Tammy Kay Bowers, the woman he madly loved, and began raising a family. His children were always his first priority and greatest blessings, and he was quick to brag about his daughters and son.
He shepherded and harbored his family well through hardship and joyous occasions, loving them deeply and always putting their needs ahead of his. He was the consummate family leader, steering gently and passing on wisdom but quickly melting into a teddy bear when the moment called for it. No one loved spoiling grandkids more than he did, whether it was over a shared ice cream, a ride on his shoulders, or a well-timed hug.
George was a sought after source of counsel for friends, co-workers, and acquaintances. His quick thinking, fascination with the way things work, and commitment to excellence made George an admired friend and mentor in his life-long career as an automotive technician, where he earned the high rank of master technician. An avid mechanic – both professionally and personally – he rebuilt multiple classics, solved acquaintances’ automotive woes free of charge, and was quick to shout compliments out a car window when he pulled alongside a sweet ride.
George relished opportunities to encourage members of his church family and pursue a deeper understanding of the God he served wholeheartedly. He was an active member and deacon of Prairie Creek Baptist Church (Plano, Texas) until his passing.
He was a man of integrity, loyalty, faith, compassion and wisdom – traits that he imparted on everyone he came in contact with, especially his family that now follows the example he set. His unconditional love for his family and his Lord exceeded all else and his willingness to give of himself to help others was an example to all. He was a beloved husband, father, Opa, brother, uncle and friend and will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
George is survived by his wife of 38 years, Tammy Kay Haller; daughter Emily Crowell and husband Andrew of Issaquah, Washington; son Petty Officer First Class George John Haller VI (USN) and wife Becky of Pensacola, Florida; daughter Grace Haller and husband Justin Henry of Austin, Texas; granddaughters Harlen Olivia Crowell, Ryder Kay Henry and grandson George John Haller VII; brother Jeffery Haller and wife Linda of Portland, Oregon; brother Robert Haller and wife Gisela of Tucson, Arizona; sister Chris Haller of Tucson, Arizona. George’s parents preceded him in death.
