Gene Edward Ewing, M.D.

January 25, 1951 — March 8, 2025

Dr. Gene Edward Ewing, 74, passed away March 8, 2025 at his home in Highland Park, Dallas, Texas. He was a dedicated pathologist, and worked in Dallas for over 40 years in private practice, at the St. Paul University Hospital, and at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Born in Fairfield (Wayne Co), Illinois to Floyd W. and Ruth (Chalcraft) Ewing on January 25, 1951, he attended Albion, Illinois grade school and Edwards County High School before pursuing both his undergraduate and medical school degrees from the University of Illinois. He completed his pathology residency at the University of Minnesota before settling in Dallas. Gene was a kind and generous person whose passion for things that interested him was tangible to those around him. He was a man of many talents; a physician, an electrician, a pilot, an expert in the latest technology, a gardener, a mathematician, a home improvement enthusiast, and a fan of the Big Ten— which led to cherished friends who shared these interests and will miss him dearly. He possessed a deep and broad intelligence but would only offer observations from his wealth of experience when asked. Gene was an adventurer who devoted hours to planning travels with friends and family. Some of his most recent adventures included going to Norway to see the orca whales chasing herring in the Arctic Ocean, seeing Caravaggio’s in Italy, attending Easter services at St. Paul’s in London, following the Mille Miglia classic car race through Tuscany, visiting beluga whales in Valencia, Spain, seeing Karen Blixen’s home in Denmark, and flying on a float plane to see bears in Katmai National Park, Alaska. Gene especially loved road trips with his partner Laure Ames, her daughter Audra, and their dogs, Bean and Henry VIII. They once saw 10 states in 10 days. There was not enough time to see and do all he wanted. Gene loved his family in Minnesota, Colorado, and Illinois and Laure’s family in Dallas, Mississippi, and California. He loved and supported Laure and was proud of her children as if they were his own. Those who mourn his death include brother Stephen (Beverly), sister-in-law Patti Ewing, nephew Nicolas Ewing, and niece Elise Ewing (Kayli) Stix, Laure Ames, and her children Audra, Austin, and his partner Rosette Pambakian. His ashes will be interred in Albion, Illinois and at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas. A service was held privately. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial made to Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute.
