Gary Burton Whitted

February 23, 1963 — March 21, 2022

Gary Burton Whitted, Sr. was born February 23, 1963, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He was proud that he and his maternal grandfather had the same birthday. One of six (6) children born to the late Reverend Anderson Whitted and the late Mrs. Betty Wright Whitted, Gary lived most of his life in North Carolina until he and his family moved to Texas.

Gary loved his wife and his family. He married the love of his life, Irma on August 22, 1981. His affectionate love for Irma for over forty (40) years was enviable. Gary and Irma were blessed with three (3) children:  Tamika, Gary Jr. “Chubby” and Precious. Family was everything to Gary. He was a devoted husband and father who was immensely proud of his children and his grandchildren’s love for him. To his family, he was known as “Big Red, Deddy, Papi and Papaw.”  In addition to his love for his family, Gary loved people. Referenced as “Mr. G” by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, his infectious smile which you could see for miles, his contagious laughter, and his kindness made him an instant favorite with everyone.

“Mr. G” grew up working with his father and grandfather in the family business, Whitted Construction Company, founded by his great grandfather. Following the family tradition of entrepreneurship, in 1995 “Mr. G” successfully launched Whitted Stucco and Tile Company. In the tradition modeled by the Whitted family, his son “Chubby” joined the company becoming a fourth-generation entrepreneur.

“Mr. G” was a gentleman and possessor of a great sense of humor. For his culinary skills, he was conferred the title of “Cobbler King” for his highly sought-after peach and apple cobblers. With his God-given musical talent, he loved to sing and play the drums. His love for music was passed down to his children. A sportsman, Gary loved playing softball and basketball. In his younger days of playing softball, opposing teams dreaded seeing him step up to bat because they knew he would hit a homerun every time. In basketball, he will be known for his “jump shot.”

“Mr. G” loved God and he loved his church. His love for the Lord began when he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. He was a worshipper, and you always knew it was a good service if you saw him leaping or taking a lap around the building. He was a resolute and faithful member of his family church, Mebane’s Chapel United Holiness Church in North Carolina where his father was the reverend for many years. He joined The River Church in Durham, North Carolina in 2001 under the leadership of Bishop Joby and Pastor Sheryl Brady. When the Brady’s answered the call to build The Potter’s House of North Dallas in Frisco, Texas, he and his family moved to Texas to help establish the church.

Gary Burton Whitted, Sr. will be joyfully met in heaven by his parents, Reverend Anderson Whitted and Betty Wright Whitted; his sisters Rachel Kimber and Patricia Whitted who proceeded him in death. His life will be honored, his memories cherished, and his legacy of love carried on by his beloved wife, Irma; children, Tamika Whitted Carter and her husband Calvin, Gary Burton Whitted, Jr. and his wife Azia, Precious Bruton and her husband Stephen; grandchildren Shamya Long, Tyson Carter, Calvin “CJ” Carter, Kiersten Carter, Brandon Carter, Nyla Whitted, Princeton Whitted, Stephen “Spanky” Bruton, Jr., and Layla Bruton; sisters Ramona Mebane, Leslie Hairston and Muriel Gilchrist and; brother Anderson (Jackie) Whitted, Jr., and a special Godson Kevin “Kev Kev” Wright, Jr.  “Mr. G” leaves a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends who loved him and will miss him.
