Garland “Chief” Peters was born on June 14, 1950 in Allegan, Michigan to parents Chester Leroy and Marion (Jackson) Peters.
He was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, growing up on the reservation there. At eighteen, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served three combat tours of duty as a radio man in Vietnam and afterward he continued serving with the Marine Corps Reserves.
In 1974 he married his pen pal, Kathy, who remained his best friend as they raised two children, Kristopher, and Krissy. Chief earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and worked in the oil and gas industry for several years, followed by employment with the City of Pantego and Chief Auto Parts.
Most recently, he could be seen behind the counter at AutoZone in Plano where he loved helping people. Chief was a member of Hunter’s Glen Baptist Church in Plano. Chief had a zest for life unlike many others. He loved fishing, the outdoors, Indian frybread, a good cigar, and mostly, his family.
Chief is preceded in death by his wife, Kathy, his daughter, Krissy, and his son, Kristopher. Chief is survived by the countless friends whose lives he made better with his smile, his wit, and his heart.
