Evelyn Claire Cooper was born on September 6, 1930 to Alfred and Audrey Cooper. She was the second of four children and grew up at 34 North Maple Ave, the large family gathering place in East Orange, New Jersey. She was a good student, took business courses in high school, and graduated from East Orange High School in 1947. She met George Francis Hickman when she was 14 while he was ushering at a movie theater. They were married on July 11, 1947, honeymooning at Niagara Falls and Martha’s Vineyard, and were together for 46 years.

Evie, as she was fondly called, worked as an administrative secretary for Progressive Insurance until quitting to start a family. They had two children, Diana and then Gary. She later worked as a part-time secretary for Bloomfield College. The family resided first in Newark and then Bloomfield, New Jersey, until George was transferred with his company to Tulsa, Oklahoma. After George died in 1994, Evie moved to Texas to be near her family.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, George, sister Barbara and Brother-in-law Andy Stanley, brother Paul “Buddy” Cooper and nephews Glenn Cooper and John Stanley. She is survived by daughter Diana Hickman-Platt of Allen, Texas, son Gary Hickman and wife Velaina of Dade City, Florida, brother Roy Cooper and wife Janet of Southampton, New Jersey, Grandsons Joshua Platt and wife Carrie and sons of Cave Springs, Arkansas, Josiah Platt and wife Jessica of Plano, Texas, Don Lowther and wife Micheal and family of Tulsa, Oklahoma, niece Linda Stanley and husband Nathan and family of Austin, Texas, nephew Jim Cooper and wife Shelley and family of Rockwall, Texas, best friend Dorothy Blake and family of Sevierville, Tennessee and various other nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. and Mrs. Darren Meyer, Dr. Marina Vengalil, Reliant Home Health and Hospice, Three Oaks Hospice, and Linah Jokonya and Greg of RLG Dignified Living, all of whom cared for Evelyn with kindness and compassion. She was much loved.
