It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eustacio (Tanching) Berganos, Sr. who left us on November 6, 2023, in Allen, Texas, at the age of 77.
Eustacio Sr. was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, godfather, and friend. He touched the lives of many through his kindness, generosity, wisdom, and unwavering curiosity. His legacy is endured by his wife of 50 years, Elvira Berganos, and his children, Beverly ✞ (Ryan) Johnson, Eustacio (Sheila) Berganos, Jr., and Eilleen Berganos. He was the grandfather to Mia Johnson, Madison Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Sabrina Berganos, and Samuel Berganos. He was a sibling to Rodrigo Berganos, Adelaida Anglo ✞, and Lucia Modesto ✞ and uncle to many nieces and nephews across the globe.
The tale of Tanching started on March 29, 1946, in Bucal, Maragondon, Cavite, Philippines, born to Monica Angeles Berganos and Matias Berganos. He attended elementary school in Bucal where he flourished as a young student. This would eventually lead him to be the valedictorian at Cavite High School. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering at Adamson University in Makati Manila, Philippines.
After college, he immigrated to Chicago, Illinois in 1971, joining his brother Rodrigo. He then reconnected with the love of his life, Elvie in 1972. They married on January 20th, 1973, at St. Mary of the Lake Church in Chicago. They lived in Roscoe Village where they had their eldest daughter, Beverly, and then their eldest son, Eustacio Jr.
Eustacio was a man of many talents and would take on multiple jobs to provide for his family. At one point, he was a gas station attendant, collected coins from meters, and worked at the infamous Davis movie theater in Lincoln Square Chicago. Eustacio started his career at Arens Control in Evanston, Illinois. He worked as a mechanical engineer with them for over 25 years designing various aspects of machinery.
In 1977, Eustacio and Elvie would purchase their first home in the North Center neighborhood on Leavitt and welcome their youngest daughter, Eilleen. This iconic home would serve as a foundation for the whole family for the next 40 years. He would invite various family members to live at Leavitt until they were able to get on their feet. It would be constant gathering places for dancing and karaoke and of course the yearly pig roast.
During this time Eustacio was also an entrepreneur. He received his real estate license and acquired a number of apartment buildings and businesses. Eustacio spent his spare time at these buildings and would become known for his unique way of fixing things, which earned him the nickname of “MacGyver”.
As much as he worked, Eustacio enjoyed life. As an avid tennis player and fan, he attended Wimbledon along with the Australian and US Open. He was always excited for a tennis match and continued playing well into his 70s. Tanching was most infamous for his dancing. At every wedding he could be found on the dance floor and brought everyone together.
Eustacio and Elvie retired spending their time between the US and Philippines. He spent his retirement years helping raise his beautiful grandchildren and traveling the world. He traveled to many astonishing places such as Petra, Dubai, Italy, Egypt, and Vietnam. He was an avid historian who knew so much about the world and its current happenings. He had a unique ability to make new friends anywhere he went.
In his late years, Eustacio would join his children and grandchildren, in Dallas, Texas. He was surrounded by an abundance of family and loved cooking new foods. He was always there to lend a helping hand and had the greatest stories to tell of our family and of the world.
Although this marks the end of his journey, he will continue to live on in the numerous lives he touched. He always took an interest in people and made everyone feel welcome. He will be known for his infectious smile and warm heart.
