Eugene "Gene Hunter Freeman

November 12, 1926 — May 16, 2021

Eugene Hunter Freeman, another of the Greatest Generation, was born on November 12, 1926, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to parents, Eugene Chapman Freeman and Jessie Ethel Dockery.  Returning to the Lord on May 16, 2021.

He was baptized and confirmed into the Roman Catholic Church.  He attended St. Francis from the first through eighth grade, ninth grade at Marquette Catholic High School and graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1944. In June, of 1944, Gene enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and was Honorably discharged in November of 1945 returning to his family now residing in Los Alamos.  He became an apprentice plumber.  He was proud to be called an Okie.

Gene was a delightful, quick witted and generous person who filled his early years in Tulsa with many sports and developed a strong and competitive love of baseball and golf which continued throughout his life. He was an amazing Bridge player, a game taught to him by his wonderful mother, Jessie, at the age of 15 and once held 13 spades while playing friends in Los Alamos, New Mexico in 1947.  In 1951, while still on the “Hill”, he met and married the love of his life, Marianthe and they returned to Tulsa so Gene could finish college.  He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Tulsa in 1956.

Upon graduation in June 1956, he was offered a job in Las Vegas, Nevada with Reynolds Electric and Engineering Company, Inc. (REECO).  He worked many years for REECO and then in the Nuclear Weapons Testing and Development program with the University of California Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the United States Atomic Energy Commission, United States Energy and Research Administration and ultimately retiring from the United States Department of Energy on November 30, 1990, after a comprehensive 34 years of service.  Gene’s work history encompassed many administrative and managerial endeavors concerning nuclear weapon’s development. He and Marianthe shared 42 adventurous, fun and happy years together until she passed away in 1993.  She graced him with three loving children, Eugene Bradley, now deceased, Stephanie Ann and Melanie Alcmene.  Gene was also blessed with five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Gene will be most remembered for his infectious laughter and amazing sense of humor, that twinkle in his eye when he was up to no-good and especially for being the best possible role model and a true example of living an honorable life for his family and friends.  You are truly missed.

Eugene is survived by his later in life great love, Judy Gail Freeman.  They both gave God the thanks and glory for bringing them together.  They shared much love, joy, and happiness together for over 25 years.  Gene enjoyed living in Dallas with Judy and became quite a fan of her friends and their Texas lifestyle adventures.  He is also survived by his daughters, Stephanie and Melanie; brother, David (Eileen) and many very loved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.
