On June 14, 2022, Dawson Reese Sorrels passed away near his home in McKinney. He was 29 years old.
Dawson’s story began in Ft Worth in 1992 and was filled with love and accomplishments. Dawson’s earliest years were spent traveling the Pacific Rim while living in South Korea with his parents. Growing up back in the USA, he enjoyed playing soccer and was not afraid to try several other sports including basketball, baseball and fencing. Dawson’s curiosity was boundless, and his earliest passions were in space travel and rocketry. Dawson received a Presidential Academic Achievement Award when graduating the sixth grade.
In high school, Dawson was an active member of the marching band when he was not hanging out with his friend's discovering technology. His high school friends continue to be a cherished part of his life. He had completed college course work before graduating from high school, and after graduation, Dawson explored life’s many options while working and attending college.
He approached life with an amazing intelligence and a highly focused work ethic which were some of his finest qualities. Dawson was a loving and compassionate man. He also voluntarily tutored new recruits on military entrance examinations before he himself briefly served in the USMC. He was currently completing his senior year for his bachelor’s degree in finance.
Dawson was movingly connected to the outdoors and went on to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout in 2009 while being inducted as a Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow (Scouting’s Honor Society). He closed out a ten-year Scouting career by mentoring younger Scouts during his final years of high school.
Dawson loved video games and reading science fiction novels which he occasionally wrote and illustrated. He loved all types of music, especially attending the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Dawson was also a great cook with his own creative style. He loved his brothers deeply, learning, growing and connecting to each other. He enjoyed traveling, and his trips to ACON with his close friends were an annual epic trek.
Dawson is survived by his parents Ben and Debbie; brothers Weston and Evan; grandmother Lavon, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many close friends. He is preceded in death by his grandfather’s Earl and Bill and his grandmother Kay.
A memorial service with be held Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 601 S Greenville Ave., Allen, Texas.
