David Young

July 12, 1946 — June 21, 2021

David B Young was born July 12, 1946, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to parents Tom and Evelyn (Wilson) Young.

David grew up in Tulsa and Ponca City.  Not being sure of what he wanted to do when he graduated from high school, he was accidently put into a calculus class, where he excelled at the subject.  Realizing he was good at math ultimately led to his associate degree in science and his career in electronics, test equipment, and sales.  He eventually went to work for Seismograph Service Corporation out of Tulsa and they sent him abroad to North Africa and Europe.

On one of his rest leaves, he traveled to England, where he met his future wife Judy Fox in 1971.  Smitten by Judy, after he had returned to his post in the Sahara Desert, he sent a telegram to her professing his love. After a truly short whirlwind romance in Malta, they returned to England and married.  When they returned to the states, David had a brief stint as a student at Tulsa University, then they were sent to Peru for one year.  They returned to Tulsa where David and Judy started their family.

He was immensely proud of and greatly loved his three sons, Scott, Daniel, and Michael.  They all lived and grew up in their home in Plano from 1980.  Judy and David would have been married for 50 years in August 2021.

David had extensive travels with his jobs, including Tunisia, Kwajalein, Algeria, and all over Africa and Europe.  He was a successful test equipment technician, salesman, business owner, electrical engineer, and musician.  He worked for and eventually became the owner of Scientific Devices.  He was their first million-dollar salesman.  In semi-retirement, he worked in the electrical department of Home Depot.

He was genuinely liked by his friends and coworkers, getting the nicknames the “Animal” because of his drumming skills, and “Q-Tip” because of his curly white hair.  He had a cheeky side and often would “invent” words, cleverly creating new catch phrases as inside jokes with family and friends.  David liked hosting parties, cooking, and got into the hobby of restoring vintage radios.  He loved bass fishing and won the title of “Mr. Bass” in 1977.  He was also a prolific amateur photographer.

In early 2018, Scott discovered David’s long-lost family connections through Ancestry.com.  In October of that year, they had the opportunity to meet David’s half brothers and sister.  They had never met before, and it was a wonderful family time.

In 2019, David was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.  It quickly progressed into dementia, making him dependent on others for his care by May 2020.  He was surrounded by his family as he peacefully passed away at the Landmark of Plano long term care facility on June 21, 2021.

David is survived by his wife of 50 years Judy Young; sons Scott Young and his wife Kate and Daniel Young and his wife Coco; grandchildren Jessica and Marcus Young; siblings Robert Bradley, Claudia Reynolds and her husband Roger, Tom Young, Jr. and his wife Evette, John Young and his wife Patty and Joe Young and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents and in 2016, David and Judy’s youngest son Michael preceded him in death.

There will be an Evening of Remembrance Thursday, July 1, 2021, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Allen Family Funeral Options, Plano, Texas.
