David Smith

September 29, 1947 — May 17, 2024

David Talmadge Smith went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 17th, 2024, after a brave battle with Alzheimer's. He was a man with a deep Christian faith and a gentle demeanor. David was born on September 29, 1947, in Plainview, Texas to Dr. Landria and Helen Smith. While at Abilene Christian University earning a business degree, he fell in love with Margaret Rust and the two were married on July 11, 1969. Two children followed: Allison and Talmadge. David derived true joy in being with his family and they benefitted from his wise and steady presence.

In 1973, David and Margaret built Pockets Menswear on Walnut Hill and Central with a small loan from his father. Many Dallas men not only discovered the joy of dressing better than they had to, but also found a long-term friend in the staff of Pockets over the nearly forty years David owned it. David loved Bible Study Fellowship and participated as a group member and leader. He and Margaret led the young adult North Dallas BSF class from 1999-2005. David's lessons were short and pithy.

Following Margaret's passing in 2011, David was introduced to Carol Hayes. The two fell in love and married in 2016. They enjoyed combining their lives and families, travelling and spending time with their grandchildren. David delighted in being "Abo," short for "abuelo." He also became a golf enthusiast in retirement.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Carol, daughter and son-in-law Will and Allison Caire of Dallas, and son and daughter-in-law Talmadge and Jenna Smith of Austin. He is also survived by stepdaughter and husband Holly and Trent Simmons and stepson and wife Kyle and Leslie Hayes; grandchildren David, Peter, Annie, and Sarah Caire; Olivia, Augustus, Eden, and Isaac Smith; Jonah, Annabelle, and Samuel Simmons; Kenzee Hayes; and sister Susan Smith and husband Steve of Flower Mound. We would like to thank caregivers Anna Bolden, Aminat Bamgbose, Martha Cooper, and Juana Soto, but most of all dear Carol for her loving and sacrificial care.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret, his parents, and his brother Paul Smith.

A celebration of David's life will be held at Park Cities Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, 2024.  If you wish to join the service via live stream available at: https://pcbcspecialevents.online.church/
