Bernard "Bernie" Matthies, 90, of Plano, Texas, died June 7, 2026, at home with his loving daughters Donna and Nancy, and his sister Joan at his bedside.
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Matthies, parents John and Ruth Matthies and sister Barbara "Babs" Oliver.
He was born on December 4, 1935, to John and Ruth Matthies in New York, New York. Bernie attended Roosevelt High school graduating in 1953 and joined the Army shortly thereafter serving from 1953 to 1955. While stationed in Germany, he was an avid soccer player.
He married the love of his life Frances (Betty) Gillespie on January 14, 1961 and they had two daughters, Donna (Matthies) Doeringsfeld and Nancy (Matthies) Gorman.
His career at Mobil Oil relocated the family first to Philadelphia for thirteen years and then relocating to Dallas (Plano) for an additional thirty-two year where he worked as a Safety and Security Supervisor until his retirement.
Bernie loved golfing, the beach, cruising, swimming, hanging with his four granddaughters and eight great grandchildren.
Bernie is survived by his daughters Donna Matthies Doeringsfeld and Nancy Matthies Gorman (Mark), granddaughters Emma Gorman Gautreaux (Justin), Ashton Doeringsfeld Aninzo (Brian), Meghan Gorman Fuller (Taylor), Katherine Gorman Tschiggfrie (Matthew), great grandchildren Logan Fuller, Chase Fuller, Frances Gautreaux, Eleanor Gautreaux, Jack Aninzo, Riley Tschiggfrie, Calvin Aninzo and Margaret Tschiggfrie plus his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
There will be a visitation at 10:00 a.m., Saturday June 13, 2026 at St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Bruce Bradley is officiating and son-in-law, Mark Gorman, will serve as acolyte.
A reception will immediately follow the mass.
Pallbearers will be Bernie's grandsons-in-law Justin Gautreaux, Taylor Fuller, Matthew Tschiggfrie, Brian Aninzo, great grandson Logan Fuller and Mike Doeringsfeld.
Bernie will be laid to rest with his wife at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church Columbarium.
