Amy Elizabeth (De Witt) Mahaffey

July 9, 1974 — May 8, 2020

Amy Elizabeth [De Witt] Mahaffey was born in Jacksonville, Florida July 9, 1974 and was called Home to the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, May 8, 2020.

Beautiful and devoted wife of Joseph Paul “JP” Mahaffey, she was a loving and sweet Mom to William, Grace and Andrew and a true and faithful friend to countless many. Her life and legacy of selfless care for her family, friends and sweet acquaintances has forever imprinted each one with her limitless smile and unending grace.

Mrs. Mahaffey has been a tireless and courageous fighter for 4 1/2 years battling a rare soft cell sarcoma. Actively involved with Sarcoma efforts in Charlotte, she was a participant in the annual Sarcoma Stomp, accompanied by hundreds of friends wearing their blue “Amy’s Angel Army” shirts.

Amy’s joy was abundant for her family and all those around her as 1 John 1:4 declares “... that your joy may be full.” She was ceaseless in her care for others ... her husband, children, relatives and friends near and far. For those others going through cancer treatment, Amy not only remembered each name, she knew and affirmed their life story with the bright hope of tomorrow.

Her selflessness was identical to the prophet Isaiah ... “Here am I! Send me.” For friends, neighbors, engagements at school with children, at every chemo infusion, trial facility, blood transfusion, it was Amy who took the first step to reach out and care for another just as she always did for her family. She was an encourager to every doctor and nurse as well.

JP and Amy were married August 18, 2001. They resided in Lynchburg, Virginia until Charlotte became their permanent home in January 2011.

Amy graduated from Christian Central Academy in Williamsville, New York subsequently receiving her Bachelor’s Degree from Cedarville University, Cedarville, Ohio. Amy was an educator and loved all the children she had the privilege to teach in Lynchburg, Virginia, just as she cherished her own three children as God brought them into her life. Upon moving to Charlotte, she became very involved in her children’s school, Providence Road Elementary where she served as Secretary and Vice President of the PTA. She loved women’s ministry and was an active volunteer and participant in the Ember Gatherings.

She is survived by her husband, JP Mahaffey and their three children, all at home in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is predeceased by her grandparents Jack & Harriett De Witt of Winter Haven, Florida and William and Freddie Young of Sebring, Florida, Amy’s older brother Kurt Addison De Witt and her loving cousin Chuck Weir. Surviving are her parents, Rev. Richard S. De Witt and Marvel A. De Witt of Plano, Texas, Uncles and Aunts Eleanor E. [De Witt] Weir and C. Frederick Weir of Sun City Center, Florida and Robert F. De Witt and Gail E. De Witt of Williamsville, New York. Cousins Brent (Nicole) De Witt of East Amherst and Ann (Jerry) Gilsdorf of Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Private family internment was held at Forest Lawn East in Matthews, North Carolina.

There will be a Celebration of Life at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Prestonwood Baptist Church, 6801 W. Park Boulevard, Plano, Texas 75093

Should you wish to make a donation in Amy’s memory, the family would ask that it be made to the Joe Perry Sports Complex at Prestonwood Baptist Church, Plano, Texas.
